Review: Worm Jazz

av Henric Brandt

In Worm Jazz, players navigate a worm through increasingly complex courses, guided by the rhythm of jazz music. As the worm consumes items, it grows in length, adding to the challenge. Players must be mindful of obstacles, including bombs, as choices made are irreversible.

Worm Jazz shares a conceptual resemblance to the classic mobile game Snake, popularized on devices like the Nokia 3310. Both games involve consuming items to increase length, thereby raising the difficulty of avoiding collisions with the character’s own body. However, Worm Jazz expands upon this core mechanic. It introduces multi-pathed tunnels, maintaining the restriction against backtracking and penalizing collisions with oneself or the environment with course restarts.

Bombs are strategically placed, reminiscent of the Bomberman series. These explosives can be either advantageous or detrimental, depending on whether the player has consumed the corresponding antidote. Furthermore, players can strategically detonate the worm mid-level to clear obstructive blocks. While early levels offer a gentle introduction, later stages present increasingly complex puzzles requiring considerable thought to solve.

Worm Jazz is well-suited for the Nintendo Switch, performing equally well in both handheld and docked modes. Its portability lends itself to on-the-go gaming, making time pass quickly. The game exhibits a compelling “one more try” quality. Many puzzle games suffer from excessive difficulty or repetitiveness; however, Worm Jazz provides excellent level variation, ensuring each puzzle presents a unique challenge.

In conclusion, Worm Jazz offers an engaging puzzle experience. A minor drawback lies in its soundtrack; the jazz music can become repetitive over extended play sessions, potentially necessitating muting the audio in favor of alternative audio sources while guiding the worm towards its objective.
