Review: Wonder Boy Collection

av senses.se

Recently, SEGA‘s Wonder Boy series has seen the release of four classic games for consoles. ININ Games and Strictly Limited Games have assembled these titles within a graphical interface, incorporating features reminiscent of mini-consoles, such as save states and graphical enhancements like CRT filters. Unlike remakes or remasters, such as their well-received re-release of the Amiga classic Turrican, this collection presents a direct emulation of the classic ROMs (from arcade and console versions) for PS4 (compatible with PS5) and Nintendo Switch.

The Wonder Boy Collection includes four titles: Wonder Boy (1986), Wonder Boy in Monster Land (1987), the similarly-named Wonder Boy in Monster World (1991), and Monster World IV (1994), which received a remastered version recently. The first is a classic example of the genre, rewarding skilled play with pixel-perfect execution. The second offers a compelling and complete experience, likely enhanced by nostalgia from the Amiga era. The third title’s gameplay mechanics have aged noticeably, while the fourth, while competent, is arguably better experienced in its remastered form as a solid platformer.

This collection is primarily targeted towards nostalgic players and dedicated fans. Given its price point of approximately 300 kronor, both physically and digitally, the value proposition for four unenhanced retro games may be questionable. A price closer to 150-200 kronor would represent a more reasonable value. While physical editions hold appeal for collectors, the average player who may already own some of these games digitally, or lacks a strong connection to the series, might find this collection more of a historical curiosity. A more compelling option might be Lizard Cube’s excellent remake of Wonder Boy III – The Dragon’s Trap.

Note: A Limited Edition release is also available from the same publisher, featuring all 21 versions of Wonder Boy in celebration of the character’s 35th anniversary. This collector’s box carries a price tag of approximately 1,500 kronor.
