Review: Wolfenstein The New Order (PS4)

av senses.se

For those unfamiliar with the landscape of 1992 gaming, it’s difficult to convey the seismic impact of ID Software’s Wolfenstein 3D. This title compelled players to upgrade from their Amigas (though some, wisely, held onto them) to 486 33MHz PCs, solely to experience the fluid gameplay of a first-person shooter that captivated audiences. Wolfenstein 3D utilized a “pseudo” 3D engine, which, at the time, was perfectly suited to the capabilities of PCs. Players navigated corridors and bunkers characterized by repetitive metal door designs, engaging in combat against Nazis, dogs, and even a robot-suited Hitler, utilizing a variety of weaponry. While character models were rudimentary (reflective of the technology’s limitations) and pixelation was prominent, the game delivered an unprecedented level of visceral action and a subversive edge. Subsequent releases included a sequel, followed by entries attempting to modernize the franchise, such as Spear of Destiny and the 2009 reboot, Wolfenstein.

Wolfenstein: The New Order, developed by MachineGames, a Swedish studio comprising veterans from Starbreeze Studios, is a title that garnered attention at E3. Having completed the game on the PS4, the question remains: Does it live up to the legacy of the series and the expectations surrounding next-generation gaming? The answer follows.

Det är inte ont om action i The New Order

In Wolfenstein: The New Order, players once again assume the role of Captain BJ Blazkowicz, an American of Polish heritage, embroiled in World War II Europe against the Nazi regime. The game opens with a cinematic sequence aboard a warplane in 1946, requiring players to manage onboard fires and engage enemy aircraft using a mounted machine gun. Following a series of dramatic events, Blazkowicz awakens in an alternate 1960, where the Nazis have emerged victorious in World War II and the United States has surrendered. The Nazis now exert global dominance, continuing human experimentation and operating extermination camps, augmented by advanced technology including Tesla grenades and colossal robots (including cyborg canines). Blazkowicz must uncover the truth behind these events, locate surviving allies, and devise a strategy to dismantle this seemingly all-powerful fascist regime.

A notable feature of Wolfenstein: The New Order is the absence of a multiplayer mode, a common staple of FPS titles. However, the developers have focused their efforts on the single-player campaign, a decision that proves beneficial. The game presents a compelling narrative, punctuated by unsettling scenes that evoke a visceral response, motivating players to pursue their Rambo-esque campaign against the Third Reich. The game’s political themes have been subject to debate: Is it appropriate to feature Nazis and Nazi ideology prominently, given the current sociopolitical climate? Is the mass slaughter of Germans (even if they are Nazis), depicted in graphic detail (including a chainsaw sequence), justified? These are questions that each individual must consider. While the game’s approach to revenge may lack subtlety, Wolfenstein: The New Order effectively motivates players to embark on a vengeance-fueled journey.

Ansiktsmodellerna i The New Order är lite stela och påminner ibland om Spitting Image-dockorna

Initially, Wolfenstein: The New Order showcases impressive visuals. Facial models appear detailed in static images, and lighting effects and environmental details exhibit careful design. However, closer inspection reveals certain shortcomings. Facial models often appear stiff and artificial, lacking the nuance found in titles such as Beyond. Some character models (such as Blazkowicz’s arms) exhibit simplified design and animation, possibly to maintain a consistent 60 frames per second. The lighting effects are less complex than those in Killzone: Shadowfall. The preference for 60 fps is subjective, influencing both the visual presentation and overall experience. While generally favored, it alters the aesthetic compared to the more cinematic feel of 30 fps (akin to the 24 fps standard for film). Similar to the “Motion Plus” effect on televisions, high frame rates can create an artificial appearance. Some members of the editorial staff reported experiencing mild motion sickness while playing Wolfenstein: The New Order, although this may be a matter of acclimation. Overall, the graphics are commendable and the gameplay is fluid; however, Wolfenstein: The New Order on PS4 does not establish new benchmarks for graphical fidelity.

The audio design presents a mixed experience. Dialogue is clear, and the sound design during combat sequences is impactful. However, some sound effects and musical elements exhibit a digitally compressed quality, creating unnatural echoes reminiscent of distorted audio transmissions. The voice acting is generally well-executed.

Wolfenstein The New Order lämpar sig inte till känsliga spelare

Wolfenstein: The New Order adheres to a linear structure, typically presenting clear objectives and pathways. It is not an open-world title with expansive environments, which has both advantages and disadvantages. The linear design maintains focus on the narrative and forward momentum, preventing player disorientation. However, it can also create a sense of claustrophobia and, at times, necessitate specific strategies for completing levels, particularly on higher difficulty settings. Failure to adhere to these strategies can result in replaying entire sequences, which can become tedious, especially during extended boss encounters. The game also incorporates a noticeable delay during reloads after player death. Although the delay is only 7-10 seconds, its repetitive occurrence during challenging sections can be disruptive.

Final verdict: Wolfenstein: The New Order is a visceral FPS title with an engaging single-player campaign. While extremely graphic, it provides entertaining action and fosters investment in the protagonist, BJ, and his Rambo-inspired quest to eliminate Nazis. The technology implementation exhibits both strengths and weaknesses. The absence of a multiplayer mode may disappoint some players. For players who enjoy FPS titles, straightforward level design, and compelling action, Wolfenstein: The New Order is a worthwhile addition to their next-generation console library. A significant evolution has occurred since 1992. (P.S. Eagle-eyed players may discover a nod to the original Wolfenstein 3D within the game.)
