Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy have received PS5 enhancements, and we’ve conducted an in-depth analysis of the upgrades, their cost, and the upgrade process.

Reviews of the original games can be found via the links above. This review focuses on the technical enhancements introduced in this collection. The original graphics were already exceptional on the PS4. Naughty Dog consistently demonstrates mastery of Playstation architecture, and the visual fidelity of Uncharted 4 on the base PS4 in 2016 (and the enhanced PS4 Pro version) was widely praised. The standard at the time was a locked 30 fps (60 fps in 720p on PS4 Pro), which was acceptable given the hardware and overall presentation. Now, six years later on the Playstation 5, players can select from three modes: Quality (native 4K resolution, 2160p locked at 30 fps), Performance (1440p locked at 60 fps), and Performance Plus (1080p at 120 fps, requiring a compatible display). The Quality mode offers the highest level of visual fidelity when carefully observing the environments. However, given the fast-paced nature of the Uncharted games, the 60 fps Performance mode provides the most compelling experience, doubling the resolution of the PS4 Pro version. The 120 fps option is beneficial for multiplayer or the more action-oriented gameplay of Lost Legacy, although occasional frame drops may occur, but are generally minor. The result is a visually stunning game, further enhanced with improved smoothness.
The audio has also been refined with Auro 3D support for headphones, offering a compelling spatial audio illusion with rich bass and detailed ambient sounds. However, a high-quality surround sound system is still preferable for achieving a truly cinematic experience, which these games deliver exceptionally well.

An additional enhancement is the incorporation of haptic feedback in the DualSense controller. This controller offers excellent functionality and ergonomics. While not a dramatic change, the added resistance and varied feedback in the trigger buttons enhance the engagement and enjoyment of combat scenarios.
How much does it cost to upgrade to Uncharted on PS5?
The upgrade path is somewhat complex. Owners of the PS4 versions of either game can upgrade for a nominal fee to the corresponding PS5 version (disc or digital). However, those who acquired Uncharted 4 through PS Plus are (similar to Final Fantasy VII: Integrade) ineligible for the upgrade and must purchase the game at full price if desired.
Uncharted 4 is an exceptional game and a fitting conclusion to the Nathan Drake saga. Lost Legacy is a high-quality experience that feels akin to an expanded DLC, with a greater emphasis on action. For owners of the full PS4 versions with a PS5, the upgrade is a worthwhile investment. However, purchasing the games at full price if you’ve already completed them on PS4 and are ineligible for the upgrade is a less compelling proposition, unless you are an avid multiplayer enthusiast who would benefit from the 120 fps mode. Newcomers to the series should consider these titles essential additions to their library, offering excellent value.
