Twinkly, a brand established by the Italian technology firm Ledworks with its initial product launch in 2016, has emerged as a leading innovator in the smart lighting sector. Globally recognized, Twinkly is particularly known in Sweden for its vibrant and customizable Christmas tree lights.
For those intrigued by the possibilities of LED lighting, this review will explore several Twinkly products. I’ve had the opportunity to evaluate the Twinkly Candies, a more accessible and playful entry point into the Twinkly ecosystem; the highly adaptable Dots, suitable for a range of applications; and the Twinkly Squares, designed to enhance gaming setups and creative spaces.
Twinkly Candies offer a more budget-conscious entry point into smart lighting. These USB-C powered LED lights are currently available in four distinct designs: Pearls, Stars, Hearts, and Candies. Ideal for adding creative lighting to hobby rooms or children’s spaces, they are offered in configurations of 100 or 200 LEDs, priced between 600 and 900 kronor. As a smart LED product, Candies are easily managed via the dedicated Twinkly app, and they support voice control through Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple HomeKit.
Note that a USB-C power adapter is not included, a decision made to reduce the overall cost. Users will need to supply their own adapter.
The Twinkly Dots present a more streamlined and discreet lighting solution. These flat, round lamps feature a slim, matte-clear design, making them less obtrusive than other Twinkly offerings. In my opinion, Dots excel as subtle accent or mood lighting, enhancing environments such as home theaters or romantic dinners. Installation is simplified with the included self-adhesive pads, allowing for easy placement along baseboards, ceilings, or other surfaces. Dots are available in configurations ranging from 60 to 400 LEDs, with prices ranging from 600 to 2,000 kronor.
Now, let’s move on to the Twinkly Squares, a product I was particularly eager to evaluate.
The Squares have generated considerable anticipation due to their versatile potential. From displaying pre-programmed GIF animations to serving as a canvas for pixelated art, like a rendition of Marilyn Monroe, the possibilities seem vast. However, I encountered a limitation with the starter kit of 6 panels: the advertised portrait and animated GIF functionalities were not supported. This omission is disappointing, considering it’s a major selling point. The core functionalities should be accessible within the starter package, especially given its price of approximately 2,900 kronor. Accessing the full range of features, including portraits and animated GIFs, requires purchasing additional panels at around 600 kronor each, significantly increasing the overall investment.
Setting aside this limitation, the Twinkly Squares, even with their core functions, remain a solid product. The panels are stylish, and installation and wall mounting are straightforward. Similar to other Twinkly products, they can display a solid color or feature dynamic lighting effects. The starter package is well-suited for enhancing gaming setups, adding an immersive dimension to the experience.
Overall, Twinkly’s products offer a compelling and enjoyable lighting experience, and are worth considering. Creative potential is limited only by one’s imagination. A notable feature is the integrated timer within the app, eliminating the need for external timing devices.
