Review: Trust Trezo

av senses.se

The Trust Trezo is the latest mouse and keyboard combo from the accessories company, emphasizing quiet operation and durability. We subjected the Trezo to rigorous testing, including extensive typing, button presses, and a deliberate coffee spill, to provide a comprehensive evaluation.

Upon unboxing the Trezo, the prominent declaration of 85% recycled plastic content immediately stands out. This is a commendable and timely initiative, aligning with the increasing focus on sustainability. However, the inclusion of AA batteries to power both the keyboard and mouse is somewhat incongruous. A rechargeable mouse and a keyboard with integrated solar charging, readily available from competitors (albeit at varying price points), would have been a more consistent choice. Trust claims a 48-month keyboard battery life and a 12-month mouse battery life per AA battery. Utilizing rechargeable batteries mitigates the environmental impact, but the opportunity for a more sustainable design feels partially missed.

The keyboard features a relatively large footprint and an integrated, non-removable wrist rest. While we appreciate this feature, it may not suit all users. Conversely, the mouse is compact, resembling models designed for mobile use. The keys offer a slightly softer feel than typically encountered. Despite an initial impression of “sponginess,” they provide a comfortable typing experience after acclimation. The significantly reduced noise level is a notable advantage, appreciated by both the user and those nearby. For users who type rapidly and forcefully, the softer keys may offer a more comfortable experience. Button responsiveness is good, although Mac users may find the placement of certain keys slightly awkward, leading to occasional incorrect presses. The keyboard is primarily mapped for Windows, including dedicated keys for Microsoft’s OS, but it functions adequately with macOS, with function keys operating as expected. Compatibility with ChromeOS should be acceptable, though we did not test this configuration.

The mouse exhibits good responsiveness and operates quietly. The characteristic clicking sound often associated with peripherals, especially gaming mice, is absent. A dedicated button beneath the scroll wheel allows for on-the-fly sensitivity adjustment (DPI, maximum 1800). Despite its smaller size, the mouse is well-suited for general office tasks, although it may not be ideal for precision work or gaming. The ambidextrous design caters to both right- and left-handed users. Construction is entirely plastic, offering functional performance. While the overall aesthetic and tactile experience lack a premium feel, they align with expectations for the product’s price point.

It is important to note the absence of Bluetooth connectivity. The devices connect via a small USB receiver that requires insertion into a computer’s USB port; connecting via a monitor’s USB hub was unsuccessful in our testing. This presents several potential drawbacks. First, the receiver utilizes a USB Type-A connector, which is becoming increasingly scarce on newer computers, particularly laptops. Second, losing the USB receiver renders both the mouse and keyboard unusable.

Regarding spill protection, we tested the keyboard’s resistance by pouring coffee onto it (note: only the keyboard has spill protection; the mouse does not). After allowing the liquid to drain and wiping away the moisture, the keyboard functioned without issue. This level of protection contrasts sharply with more expensive accessories that can be rendered unusable by minimal liquid exposure. The keyboard also incorporates drainage holes on its underside. While we generally advise against having liquids near computers, their presence in the office is common. However, the keyboard should not be considered fully waterproof, and caution is still advised.

With a price of approximately 600 SEK, the Trezo represents a reasonable investment for those seeking a quiet mouse and keyboard, a feature likely appreciated by those in the surrounding environment. Some compromises are present, likely dictated by the price point. However, considering that a standalone mouse or keyboard can cost twice as much (and may lack spill resistance), we readily recommend the Trust Trezo to our readers.
