Review: theHunter – Call of the Wild (Te Awaroa National Park)

av Cenny Bjurvén

Expansive Worlds released the Te Awaroa National Park DLC for theHunter: Call of the Wild on PC in December 2020. This review covers the console version (specifically, the Xbox One X edition), which has been recently released. Given that the base game debuted in 2017, this DLC is one in a series of expansions. While I was relatively new to the game, I was eager to explore this installment, as I maintain a strong interest in hunting simulations.

Considering the game’s established history of DLC releases, my expectations were high for an immersive hunting simulator. The well-crafted animated sequences made a strong first impression. The landscapes are visually impressive and realistic, with detailed environments ranging from high mountain peaks to deep valley floors, enhancing the player’s immersion.

The core gameplay emphasizes realism. Animals respond to sound, scent, and visual detection, demanding careful use of the environment for concealment. After a notable learning period, I successfully stalked a bear. Taking aim while prone, I fired; the shot landed accurately, resulting in my first trophy. However, this initial success was short-lived as the bear fled. The subsequent pursuit consumed an hour, covering approximately half of the expansive 64 square kilometer reserve. Due to my limited patience, I was ultimately unable to track the wounded animal to ground.

This title may not appeal to players seeking fast-paced, high-volume shooting experiences. Expansive Worlds has prioritized a realistic experience, which often involves extended periods of tracking animals before a sighting occurs. Successful hunts require precise shots; otherwise, the tracking process restarts. Player reception will likely be polarized: the game demands considerable patience to complete objectives.

In summary, theHunter: Call of the Wild offers an immersive experience centered around natural environments. The graphical fidelity of the Xbox One X version is noteworthy, closely resembling the PC version. Details such as forest environments, realistic shadows, and detailed tree textures are rendered effectively. Ultimately, individual player preferences will determine the level of enjoyment derived from this title.

Regardless of gaming experience, players with an interest in hunting and a capacity for patience will appreciate the engaging gameplay and graphical quality offered by this DLC.
