Review: The Mysterious Cities of Gold – Secret Paths (Wii U / iOS)

av senses.se

Puzzle game based on the Japanese-Belgian anime of the same name (known as The Mysterious Cities of Gold in some regions). Players control three characters who must cooperate to traverse intricate labyrinths and activate pressure plates to progress. The in-game visuals are well-rendered; however, the cutscenes exhibit subpar sound design. Despite varied environments and ambitious design, the game unfortunately becomes repetitive and presents a limited challenge for players older than 12. Nonetheless, its violence-free nature makes it suitable for co-operative play with younger children.

sneak, switch, press - repeat.

Priced around 100 SEK on Wii U, the game’s simplicity may not fully justify the cost on a modern console. It may be better suited to iPad or other iOS devices; however, the 95 SEK price point on those platforms appears somewhat inflated. A price of 49 or 38 SEK would represent a more appropriate value.

Note: Mysterious Cities of Gold: Secret Paths originated as a Kickstarter project and is reportedly available in Swedish, although this review is based on the English-language version.

The iconic opening sequence from the original series – be forewarned that the theme song is highly memorable.
