Review: The Lego Movie 2 (UHD)

av Henric Brandt

Upon viewing The Lego Movie 2 in theaters, I found it enjoyable, but noted some shortcomings. It didn’t quite reach the heights of the original, and felt somewhat less ambitious in scope. However, revisiting the film on UHD allowed for a more nuanced appreciation, enabling a focus on its strengths rather than its perceived weaknesses.

Lego-filmen 2 recension

The film benefited from a second viewing; while it still presents a narrative on a smaller scale than its predecessor, and the internal logic isn’t entirely consistent, a subtle detail emerged. A fleeting line of dialogue seems to acknowledge that the events are a product of children’s imaginative play, although this interpretation doesn’t fully resolve all inconsistencies.

The UHD presentation is, as anticipated, excellent. Animated content typically benefits from high-definition formats, and the upgrade to Ultra HD in 4K resolution with HDR elevates the visual experience significantly. Color reproduction, sharpness, and black levels are all rendered in exemplary balance. The Dolby Atmos sound design is equally commendable, providing impactful audio when appropriate, with meticulously balanced levels that ensure clear dialogue. While the surround sound mix could have been more immersive, this is a characteristic of the original film’s audio design, rather than a fault of the UHD edition itself.

The edition includes a substantial amount of supplementary material, much of which is well-produced. Although the documentaries are relatively brief, they offer valuable insights. However, the disc features a short film that feels incongruous with the rest of the content. Featuring a ship introduced in Lego-filmen 2, the short ultimately reveals itself as a promotional piece, detracting from the overall viewing experience and feeling somewhat underwhelming.

Switching to the Swedish dubbing, I was pleasantly surprised by its quality. The voice acting is well-executed, and the musical numbers translate effectively. Coco was a previous example of a particularly well-done Swedish dub.

In conclusion, revisiting Lego-filmen 2 was an enjoyable experience. While it doesn’t quite reach the same heights as the original, it remains a compelling film with numerous inventive and well-crafted scenes. The UHD edition of Lego-filmen 2 is a worthwhile addition to any collection.
