Review: The Gunk

av Henric Brandt

Our protagonists, Rani and her companion Becks, find themselves on an uncharted planet, seeking energy resources for their ship and valuable commodities to trade. They soon discover that the planet is progressively being consumed by a viscous substance referred to as The Gunk. Rani is equipped with a specialized robotic arm capable of extracting this sludge, offering a means to potentially restore the planet. Their discovery of a lost civilization reveals a situation of far greater magnitude than initially anticipated.

The Gunk is developed and published by Swedish companies, showcasing the increasing quality of games originating from the region. While unfamiliar with The Gunk prior to receiving it for review, the trailer immediately piqued my interest. The game exhibited a distinct and compelling atmosphere.

The core game mechanics are relatively conventional, involving the collection of elements to enhance equipment. Players will quickly become proficient in utilizing the robotic arm, which offers a versatile range of functions. Strategic utilization of the environment is essential for progression. The world’s vibrant aesthetic evokes comparisons to the planet Pandora (Avatar), yet maintains its own unique identity.

As previously mentioned, the encroaching sludge, known as The Gunk, initially presents a seemingly minor threat. However, its lethality escalates as players advance through the game. Clearing an area of The Gunk results in the revitalization of vegetation and a return to its prior state, a process that remains consistently satisfying.

The discovery of remnants from a fallen civilization marks a turning point, transforming the gameplay from simple exploration and sludge removal into a more engaging experience. This shift makes the game particularly compelling and difficult to stop playing. The controls are responsive and enjoyable, and the well-placed checkpoints minimize frustration upon failure. The Gunk offers an accessible initial experience, but quickly ramps up the difficulty, presenting numerous inventive solutions for overcoming obstacles and progressing.

A minor drawback lies in the occasional feeling that some animations appear somewhat dated for a modern title. However, this is a superficial issue, as The Gunk provides an enjoyable experience with a compelling narrative, interesting characters, and an attractive price point (further enhanced by its inclusion in Game Pass), making it a highly recommended title.
