Review: The Girl in The Spider’s Web (UHD)

av senses.se

The Girl in The Spider’s Web represents a significant departure from previous installments in the series, with a recasting of the lead role and a reimagining of Mikael Blomkvist’s character. As an action thriller, the film is competently executed, exhibiting the directorial style of Fede Alvarez (Don’t Breathe). We recommend first reading Henric’s review of the theatrical release, as this assessment will concentrate on the UHD edition in 4K with Dolby Atmos audio.

This fourth Lisbeth Salander film (based on Olof Lagercrantz’s Det som inte dödar oss, the fourth book in the Millennium series) features visually striking cinematography, particularly of Stockholm at night. The imagery showcases both Salander traversing the city’s main thoroughfares on her motorcycle and a dramatic escape across a frozen Riddarfjärden from Kvarnholmen to Djurgården. The UHD 4K transfer demonstrates excellent handling of varying degrees of darkness and shadow, preserving detail and nuance. This stands in stark contrast to the artifact-ridden compression often seen in dark scenes on streaming services such as HBO Nordic (for instance, the catacombs beneath Winterfell in Game of Thrones). Sharpness and the color red – a key element in this film – are reproduced with exceptional quality. While occasional green screen effects are slightly noticeable, the overall image quality is highly enjoyable on a large, high-performance 4K HDR display.

The audio track is nearly as impressive as the visuals, delivering generous, controlled bass alongside clear dialogue. The sound design is further enhanced by a subtle yet effective use of surround effects and ambient acoustics. Dolby Atmos offers a distinct improvement over standard Blu-ray HD-MA (Master Audio), providing a significantly richer and more immersive soundscape, provided you have the appropriate audio equipment to fully realize its potential.

The extras include an informative commentary track with the filmmakers, offering deeper insights into the production, and several featurettes. These supplemental materials subtly highlight Sony’s directive to make this second Salander film (in the US, officially) “more accessible,” which inevitably impacted the depth of darkness and character development explored with Lisbeth. Claire Foy, who portrays the avenging hacker, is a capable actress (notably in The Crown); however, her performance as Salander feels somewhat constrained, resulting in a character that is often monotonous and terse. The accented dialogue is also a point of distraction. Rather than allowing actors to use their natural voices and accents, the English-speaking cast attempts a fabricated “Scandi-English” accent that often resembles a poorly executed German accent. Furthermore, the decision to cast a younger actor as Mikael Blomkvist serves no discernible purpose and arguably weakens the dynamic. However, given the passing of Mikael Nyqvist, Sverrir Gudnason fulfills the role adequately.

In conclusion, The Girl in The Spider’s Web is a serviceable action thriller suitable for casual viewing, though unlikely to be remembered as a standout in the genre. However, the UHD 4K edition is a worthwhile addition to the collection of serious film enthusiasts. The opportunity to see Stockholm depicted in a major motion picture is always appealing, and the film features several memorable sequences and skillful camerawork, resulting in a visually accomplished presentation. It is regrettable that the concept was diluted in an attempt to appeal to a “wider” audience, as Lisbeth Salander’s defining characteristic is her “edginess.” While the film itself might warrant a rental rather than a purchase, the UHD edition is highly recommended. The physical edition offers a demonstrably superior picture and sound quality compared to the digital UHD 4K version available on platforms such as iTunes.
