Review: The Gap

av Henric Brandt

In The Gap, players assume the role of Joshua, a neuroscience researcher driven to find a cure for a rare disease devastating his family. This ailment progressively erodes memories, leading to the dissolution of personality and cognitive function. The family’s ordeal is depicted through recollections of both their triumphs and tragedies. Joshua must navigate parallel realities via déjà vu to recover his memories and save himself and his loved ones.

The Gap presents a distinctive premise. Players experience the world through the protagonist’s perspective, exploring his subconscious and fragmented memories. Throughout the game, players uncover notes, memoirs, and puzzles that gradually reveal the intricacies of the mystery and advance the narrative. Piecing together these scattered fragments of information is central to the gameplay experience.

The developers of The Gap state that significant research was conducted to ensure the scientific accuracy of the in-game notes. The narrative of Joshua and his family is a core component, delivering a thought-provoking story enriched with puzzles, well-developed character arcs, conflicts, and sustained tension.

Despite possessing the elements for a compelling and emotionally resonant experience, The Gap falls slightly short. While the game maintained my interest, I found myself lacking a deeper connection with Joshua and his plight. Furthermore, the game’s initial lack of clarity regarding core mechanics proved frustrating. An early puzzle required specific form completion, which was not adequately explained. While I appreciate games that avoid excessive hand-holding, The Gap would have benefited from slightly more initial guidance.

In conclusion, The Gap is a unique and intriguing title that differentiates itself from other games in the genre. Addressing the initial lack of clarity in game mechanics would mitigate potential player frustration.
