Review: The Angry Birds Movie 2

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

Remember the Super Mario Bros. movie disaster? The Angry Birds Movie 2 faced similar skepticism, but it's a surprisingly fun ride! This sequel unites the birds and pigs against a new eagle threat, led by the formidable Zeta. Expect the same sharp humor and clever nods to the game that made the first film a hit, with even some surprising (and well-placed) adult jokes. While the baby birds' expanded role is cute, the film truly shines with its vibrant characters and fast-paced, enjoyable story. Though UHD isn't available everywhere, the Blu-ray offers great visuals, sound, and plenty of bonus features. Dive into the full review to see why this animated sequel is a feathered friend worth rooting for!

In 1993, the Super Mario Bros. movie, based on the legendary Nintendo game, premiered to disastrous results. Filmmakers seemingly failed to translate the classic platformer to the big screen. Consequently, when the Angry Birds movie was released in 2016, skepticism was high, with some anticipating a similar outcome. After all, the popular mobile game isn’t exactly known for its intricate plot. However, the first movie proved to be surprisingly entertaining and genuinely funny, bolstered by a strong cast. This raises the question: can The Angry Birds Movie 2 live up to its predecessor?

Red (Jason Sudeikis) is a celebrated hero on Bird Island, having saved its inhabitants from the pigs. However, with no immediate threats looming, he senses his heroic status beginning to wane. That is, until Pig King Leonard (Bill Hader) arrives seeking an unlikely alliance. A third island, inhabited by Eagles and led by the formidable Zeta (Leslie Jones), poses a new danger with aspirations of global domination. To combat this common enemy, the angry birds and the green pigs must join forces.

To answer the initial question, The Angry Birds Movie 2 successfully maintains the engaging and humorous style established by the first film. The filmmakers have effectively balanced faithfulness to the source material with clever references to the game itself.

Given the birds’ inability to fly, the slingshot serves as their primary mode of transportation. The film’s humor seems to push the boundaries a bit, perhaps benefiting from its distance from Disney’s more family-oriented brand.

The movie incorporates subtle, well-timed swear words that enhance the comedic effect. There were several instances where I found myself genuinely laughing out loud, which is noteworthy, as I rarely react that strongly when watching movies alone.

Thanks to its humor and vibrant characters, The Angry Birds Movie 2 appeals to both adults and children. The exceptionally cute baby birds also feature more prominently in this installment, with mixed results. While adding to the charm, some of their jokes occasionally feel overextended.

Regrettably, a UHD edition of The Angry Birds Movie 2 is not available in Sweden, though it is accessible for 4K enthusiasts in other regions. Nordic viewers will have to make do with the Blu-ray version. Fortunately, it’s a solid release with vibrant colors and an immersive DTS-HD audio track. Furthermore, the disc is packed with extras, including short films and insightful documentaries, adding further value.

In conclusion, The Angry Birds Movie 2 is a worthwhile and enjoyable experience. Its fun and fast-paced narrative exceeded initial expectations.
