Review: Terminator Genisys (Bio)

av Christian Moberg

According to franchise founder James Cameron, that is the intent, although his involvement in this film is comparable to the previous two. He did express his support in an interview. Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is widely considered a misstep, despite Arnold Schwarzenegger’s participation. Indeed, both he and many viewers likely prefer to forget its existence.

In 2009, Terminator Salvation, starring Christian Bale and Sam Worthington, attempted to reinvigorate the series, but failed to resonate with audiences and critics. Notably, Schwarzenegger was absent. Arnold Schwarzenegger is the Terminator, making it difficult to fully embrace a film without him. Since 1984, he has embodied the implacable, deadly robot sent to eliminate Sarah Connor, the mother of future war leader John Connor. In the 1980s, she was portrayed by Linda Hamilton. Now, over three decades later, Emilia Clarke (Game of Thrones) takes on the role, delivering a performance reminiscent of Hamilton’s, though perhaps less hardened.

Terminator Genisys immediately signals a return to form. The core characters – Kyle Reese, John and Sarah Connor, and the Terminator – are presented with a script that acknowledges the classic Cameron films. This is a welcome approach, with many of the one-liners directly referencing previous installments, providing satisfying callbacks for long-time fans. The story begins similarly to the first film but quickly diverges, developing in intriguing ways and resolving narrative threads effectively. Genisys refers to a computer system, the origin of Skynet, initially conceived as a benign tool to automate social media. Its integration into the military marks the beginning of the war. Our heroes must travel to 2017 to avert disaster. The journey features both humor and well-executed action sequences.

In contrast to recent blockbusters, including Fast & Furious 7, the action scenes in Terminator Genisys are genuinely engaging. While special effects and explosions are prevalent, they are implemented with precision and remain true to the spirit of the Terminator universe. Alan Taylor maintains a balance that prevents desensitization, allowing for full enjoyment of the spectacle. The impactful sound design further enhances the experience, providing visceral feedback without becoming overwhelming.

Aside from minor plot inconsistencies and a somewhat superfluous character portrayed by J.K. Simmons, Terminator’s return to the big screen is largely successful. Emilia Clarke delivers a commendable performance as Sarah Connor, Jai Courtney is adequate as Kyle Reese, and Jason Clarke is suitable as John Connor. And Arnold, true to his word, is back.
