We previously utilized a similar model in our office for approximately ten years before it reached the end of its lifespan. This accessory features a sizable, wedge-shaped plastic construction with anti-slip pads. It incorporates two integrated fans powered via USB-A, a connection that may be considered somewhat dated in 2020. Priced around 300 SEK, it effectively provides a comfortable platform for using a laptop on your lap, suitable for scenarios such as working from a sofa.
The Chill Mat accommodates a range of laptop sizes, from 13 to 17 inches. As previously noted, it also facilitates cooling, an appreciated feature for users who frequently use laptops on their laps. The integrated fans are designed to maintain optimal internal temperatures, mitigating potential performance throttling and reducing the need for the laptop’s internal fans to operate at high speeds, which can generate significant noise, particularly in high-performance laptops. While the Chill Mat exhibits low noise levels initially (approximately 33 dB), the fan noise may gradually increase over time, potentially negating some of the initial benefit. For less demanding tasks, using the platform without the fans may suffice.
In addition to the USB-A connection for the fans, which may be considered outdated, some users have reported concerns regarding the platform’s long-term durability and potential issues with the power cable becoming loose. As the frame is constructed from plastic, wear and tear is expected over time. However, our experience indicates that the Targus Lap Chill Mat can provide a service life of at least 6-8 years with proper care, representing acceptable longevity for its price point. Individual experiences may vary depending on usage patterns. The product is covered by a two-year warranty against manufacturing defects.
The Targus Chill Mat performs its intended function and is reasonably convenient for home use, although its size makes it less suitable for travel. Despite the aforementioned considerations, it represents a worthwhile investment for users who frequently use a laptop on their lap. While a table or alternative solution often suffices, this product is a suitable choice for those who enjoy gaming or streaming content on a sofa, particularly during warmer months.
