Review: Super Mario RPG

av senses.se

Super Mario RPG, the SNES classic from 1996 (originally subtitled Legend of the Seven Stars), has been remastered for the Nintendo Switch, honoring the original adventure while incorporating modern enhancements. The graphical overhaul presents a visually impressive experience, arguably making it one of the most aesthetically pleasing titles on the console (particularly with enhancements such as mClassic). Certain sequences exhibit such significant improvements and stylistic flair that they appear almost beyond the capabilities of the six-year-old Switch. Furthermore, Yoko Shinomura’s exceptional score has been re-orchestrated, enriching the already captivating JRPG experience, although the melody loops may resonate primarily with those already familiar with the game.

In terms of gameplay, the combat system benefits from refined Action Commands, offering a more intuitive battle experience. The implementation of damaging combinations rewards precise button timing, granting significant damage bonuses. Inventory management has also been streamlined, addressing a primary concern regarding the original release.

Despite the improvements, certain aspects of this remake are less compelling. The game retains the relatively low difficulty of the original, which might disappoint players seeking a greater challenge. A proficient player can complete the main storyline in approximately five hours, excluding time spent on optional side quests. Characters such as Peach and Bowser (who, while not the primary antagonist, becomes an ally) remain notably powerful, impacting the overall balance. Moreover, platforming sequences have not been sufficiently refined and can still prove frustrating due to the isometric perspective, where ground shadows serve as the primary reference for positioning jumps.

In conclusion, Super Mario RPG on Switch delivers a nostalgic and visually appealing experience that effectively captures the essence of the original game while incorporating enhancements for a more modern feel. While further improvements could have been implemented, particularly regarding game depth and challenge, this title will appeal to both newcomers to turn-based RPGs from the classic Squaresoft era and those who hold fond memories of the original.
