I previously reviewed Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse in theaters, and that review can be found here. This review will focus on the comprehensive Blu-ray edition.
During my initial viewing of Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, I felt that certain plot points were rushed and the script occasionally faltered. The extended version included on this disc clarifies the reasoning behind these perceived issues. This extended cut integrates mostly rough, storyboard-quality sketches of scenes that were originally omitted. These additions fill narrative gaps and, in my opinion, significantly improve the overall film. One notable addition is a more developed subplot involving Miles Morales’ roommate. While the roommate’s presence is minimal in the theatrical release, he plays a more active role in the extended version, providing substantial assistance to Miles as he navigates his newfound responsibilities as a superhero.

Beyond the extended version, this Blu-ray features a wealth of in-depth documentaries and interviews. It has been some time since I’ve encountered such a feature-rich edition. While robust supplementary content was common 8-9 years ago, it has become increasingly rare. This release, however, offers a genuine treasure trove of bonus material. Furthermore, commentary tracks are included.

Regarding the picture and sound quality: Blu-ray, while delivering a visually impressive experience for a digitally animated film, is inherently limited and cannot achieve the same level of clarity as a 4K presentation. The DTS-HD audio track is perfectly adequate, but I’ve grown accustomed to the immersive qualities of Dolby Atmos and found myself missing its enhanced soundstage and impact.

The extended version of Spider-man: Into the Spider-verse addressed my initial reservations about the film, and the comprehensive and well-produced Blu-ray edition elevates its overall value. A UHD edition would have undoubtedly earned a perfect score!
