With no annual Skylanders update slated for 2017, the 2016 edition of this toys-to-life game, Skylanders Imaginators, currently stands as the latest installment. Fortunately, it’s also one of the most engaging entries in the series.

In Skylanders Imaginators, players can design personalized Skylanders, which can then be saved onto special crystals that illuminate on the portal. The game draws inspiration from Skylanders Swap-Force by enabling players to combine different body parts, character classes, and elemental powers, allowing for the creation of truly unique heroes. This year’s Skylanders figures, dubbed “senseis” (a reference to Japanese martial arts), serve to train these custom Skylanders. These senseis include well-known characters (a clear nod to Pokémon trainers and gyms) such as Kaos, Chompy Mage (previously a villain in Superchargers), Master Ember, Crash Bandicoot, and Dr Neo Cortex (from the PlayStation One era).
Imaginators represents the most visually refined Skylanders experience on the PS4 and Xbox One to date. With its lighthearted cartoon violence and two-player co-op mode, it’s an ideal game for players of all ages. While Skylanders Imaginators may not introduce revolutionary mechanics that will attract entirely new players, long-time fans of the series will find it to be a compelling addition. Furthermore, for those looking to enter the toys-to-life genre, Imaginators presents an excellent starting point.
Beyond the core game, the Skylanders Academy animated series is also available on Netflix. One can hope that Activision will take a strategic pause and return with a revitalized Skylanders title in the future, similar to Ubisoft’s approach with Assassin’s Creed, which saw a significant improvement with the 2017 Origins release.
The Skylanders Imaginators Starter-Pack retails from approximately 300 SEK and is available on all major gaming platforms. Sensei figures are priced around 150 SEK each, while crystals can be purchased for approximately 100 SEK individually (or at a reduced price in bundled packs).
