Review: Sharp – XParty Sing PS-931

av Cenny Bjurvén

Sharp’s extensive history and diverse product range are well-known, a legacy built over nearly 110 years. The Japanese corporation has recently launched the XParty Sing PS-931 speaker, an enhanced iteration of the popular PS-929. Senses received a review unit, and this is my assessment. Is the PS-931 a must-have for upcoming events, or does it fall short? Let’s delve into its capabilities.

Design

The initial impression might be that the design is somewhat flamboyant, possibly targeting a younger demographic. However, the matte black finish, sharp lines, tapered form, and integrated carrying handle give it an assertive aesthetic, whether positioned vertically or horizontally. With a height of 58 cm, it makes a bold statement. The unit features customizable RGB lighting, offering solid color illumination or automatic color-shifting programs. A music-sync mode is available, enabling the lighting to react dynamically to the audio. The PS-931 also incorporates a built-in strobe light – a feature that evokes classic disco aesthetics. The comprehensive lighting system arguably positions the speaker more towards a younger audience.

The top panel features user-friendly, rubber-coated buttons for controlling volume (master and microphone), Super Bass, equalizer settings, power, track navigation, Bluetooth/source selection, play/pause, and echo.

Connection & Function

The speaker offers versatile connectivity options, accommodating various user preferences. It supports Bluetooth pairing, a 3.5 mm AUX input, and USB connectivity. Notably, unlike the Sumobox, this unit features two USB ports: one for charging and another dedicated to media playback. Source selection is straightforward, using the clearly labeled button on the top panel.

Aligning with current technological trends, the PS-931 incorporates TWS (True Wireless Stereo) functionality, similar to the Marshall Emberton III. This allows pairing two speakers to create a wider, more immersive stereo soundstage.

A microphone is included for karaoke, speeches, or general vocal amplification. A second microphone can be connected for duets, although it must be purchased separately. The included microphone’s build quality is somewhat basic, and the audio quality is acceptable but not exceptional. It is also a wired microphone, which limits mobility.

The speaker is suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, powered either by a standard 230V wall outlet or its built-in battery. The battery provides up to 13 hours of playback on a full charge (approximately 3 hours to recharge). An IPX4 rating indicates splash resistance, providing protection against light rain or accidental spills.

Soundstage

The PS-931 provides considerable audio customization. Users can select from preset sound profiles (Flat/Pop/Dance/Rock/Live and Club), engage the Super Bass function for enhanced low-end response, or utilize the equalizer to fine-tune specific frequencies to their preference.

Initial expectations were moderate, considering the PS-931‘s mid-size form factor (58 cm) and relatively light weight (just over 5 kg). However, the speaker delivers a surprisingly robust and high-quality sound. It handled a diverse range of musical genres, from folk to black metal, without exhibiting distortion or unwanted artifacts. Whether reproducing SIA’s soaring vocals in “Chandelier” or the deep bassline in Alannah Myles’ “Black Velvet,” the speaker performed admirably. Pushing the limits with the metal track “Extermination” by Upon A Burning Body at maximum volume and with the Super Bass engaged, the PS-931 maintained clarity across all tones, growls, and drum beats.

Summary

In conclusion, the Sharp XParty Sing PS-931 exceeded expectations. It’s a portable party speaker that provides impressive sound quality for its size, offered at a reasonable price point of approximately SEK 2,500. This represents significant value for the audio performance and party-oriented features. If you’re in the market for a capable and affordable party speaker, the PS-931 is highly recommended. Overall, the speaker warrants a strong rating.
