Review: Shark Detect Pro

av Björn Alsborger

We recently reviewed the Dreame Z30, with favorable results. Now, we turn our attention to a new cordless stick vacuum cleaner, the Shark Detect Pro. This model is available in two configurations: one featuring a self-emptying base station, and a more streamlined version, which we are evaluating here, that omits the base station.

The package contents are relatively basic, comprising the vacuum cleaner, wand, charger, and a crevice tool.

Our initial impression upon unpacking and assembling the vacuum cleaner is that the materials feel predominantly plastic. The unit lacks the premium tactile feedback often associated with new products. This perception persists even after full assembly; the construction feels somewhat flimsy and exhibits a degree of instability.

The perceived instability stems, in part, from one of the vacuum cleaner’s more functional features: a jointed wand. A button on the wand allows it to be folded, facilitating access under furniture such as stairs and sofas without requiring excessive bending or kneeling.

A notable design characteristic is the vacuum cleaner’s inability to stand upright independently when assembled. Leaning it against a wall proves equally futile, as it tends to roll away. Consequently, the vacuum cleaner must be detached from the wand for storage, creating a somewhat inconvenient workflow. While this design results in a compact storage footprint, it also means that initiating a quick cleaning session requires assembly, and disassembly is necessary upon completion.

The vacuum cleaner features two primary controls: a power button and a mode selection button. Three distinct modes are available: an energy-saving mode, a maximum power mode, and an automatic mode. In automatic mode, integrated sensors analyze floor debris and dynamically adjust brush speed and suction power accordingly.

The main nozzle incorporates a brush designed to enhance debris pickup, particularly for larger particles that suction alone may not effectively capture. While the vacuum cleaner’s suction power is not exceptionally strong, the brush provides a noticeable improvement in cleaning performance. While it doesn’t match the power of a traditional corded vacuum, it proves adequate for quick cleanups, such as addressing spills after a meal.

The brush is easily removable for cleaning, and its design effectively prevents hair and dust from becoming entangled, instead directing them into the vacuum cleaner’s suction stream.

The nozzle is equipped with an LED light strip that illuminates the cleaning path. When vacuuming in low-light conditions, such as under cabinets, a portion of the lights intensifies to provide enhanced visibility where it is most needed.

As previously mentioned, the automatic mode dynamically adjusts suction power and brush speed based on detected debris levels. The system generally performs well, increasing power when encountering dirtier surfaces, walls, or carpets. However, the unit occasionally defaults to maximum power without an immediately apparent reason.

The dirt container is easily emptied by either opening the lid and pouring out the contents, or by detaching the entire container from the vacuum cleaner. A design oversight is that the lid must be opened before the container can be removed.

The manufacturer’s specifications claim a battery life of up to 60 minutes. However, our testing suggests that this figure is optimistic. When using the recommended automatic mode, battery life ranges from 10 to 25 minutes, depending on surface debris and carpet density. In maximum power mode, the battery lasts for approximately 10 minutes. Therefore, the Shark Detect Pro is not ideally suited as a primary vacuum cleaner or for extensive cleaning tasks. Even for smaller cleanups, such as in the kitchen or hallway, frequent charging is required.

Conclusion

The Shark Detect Pro offers several positive attributes, including a flexible wand, a responsive automatic mode, and useful integrated lighting. However, several drawbacks temper its appeal. The build quality feels somewhat insubstantial, and the overall design lacks refinement. Compared to the Dreame Z30, which includes a more comprehensive set of attachments, the Shark Detect Pro feels somewhat lacking in accessories. While the Shark Detect Pro’s recommended price of SEK 3990 is considerably lower than the Dreame Z30’s price of approximately SEK 6500, we believe the Dreame vacuum cleaner represents a more compelling value proposition. Nevertheless, if a budget-conscious supplementary vacuum cleaner is needed for quick cleanups, and extensive accessories and extended battery life are not essential requirements, the Shark Detect Pro warrants consideration.
