Review: Puzzle Bobble EveryBubble!

av senses.se

Originating from the golden age of 1980s arcade gaming, Taito’s Bubble Bobble is a platformer from Japan renowned for its charming dinosaurs capable of creating bubbles. This initial title spawned multiple sequels and ports for home computers and consoles, as well as the spin-off game Puzzle Bobble (1994, also known as Bust-A-Move). Now, nearly 30 years later, we examine Puzzle Bobble Everybubble, a recent addition to the series and currently a Nintendo Switch exclusive, which introduces several innovative concepts.

The core gameplay revolves around a simple yet addictive mechanic: launching colored bubbles at a cluster of bubbles situated at the top of the screen. Successfully connecting three or more bubbles of the same color causes them to disappear. A key challenge lies in the inherent pressure to perform efficiently, as the descending bubbles necessitate rapid decision-making, creating a balance between engaging relaxation and demanding gameplay. Clearing everything within a time limit is another mode.

Each world features fifteen levels, each introducing new gameplay mechanics to maintain variety. For instance, one level incorporates clear bubbles that adopt the color of the bubble they are struck by, while another features bubbles that cycle through colors at regular intervals. While these additions can occasionally impact the difficulty level substantially, the subtle adjustments effectively alter the player’s strategic approach.

Despite its innovations, the game exhibits some shortcomings. The aesthetic presentation feels somewhat inconsistent. The graphics are functional, but lack distinction. A minor detail is the replacement of the bubble cannons from which the dinosaurs used to shoot bubbles, with bubble throwing by hand. These elements, while not critical, slightly diminish the overall impression.

Conversely, the cooperative mode stands out as a valuable addition. Up to four players can collaborate or compete on a single Nintendo Switch console. Online multiplayer is also available. For solo players or those without local companions, CPU-controlled characters can fill in, but this raises the question of their efficacy. While the AI-controlled players perform adequately, strategic coordination and reactive adjustments are absent. A solo playthrough can be protracted, making CPU companions potentially worthwhile.

In conclusion, Puzzle Bobble Everybubble represents a competent addition to the series, offering substantial entertainment value, particularly in multiplayer. Fans of the Puzzle Bobble franchise seeking a fresh challenge, or players seeking a fast-paced, enjoyable, and reasonably priced cooperative experience, will find Puzzle Bobble Everybubble appealing. Despite minor drawbacks, such as the unremarkable graphic presentation and occasional difficulty spikes, the game’s solid mechanics and engaging co-op mode are notable strengths. It is an entertaining title within its genre and merits consideration for enthusiasts of accessible, high-quality arcade-style games.
