Review: Prim

av Henric Brandt

Prim invites players to embark on an extraordinary point-and-click adventure, following the titular character as she navigates a unique family dynamic. After the death of her mother, Prim discovers that her father is, in fact, Death. Relocated to the Realm of the Dead, Prim rebels against her father’s strict rule and monotonous environment. On her 16th birthday, Prim’s latent powers manifest, leading to unforeseen consequences that she must now rectify – a task more complex than initially anticipated.

Prim presents itself as a distinctive and captivating title. Arriving with little prior knowledge, the trailer immediately piqued interest. The game’s aesthetic evokes the distinctive style of Tim Burton (Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice), a clear visual strength. The blend of humor, music, and gameplay mechanics creates a nostalgic experience, reminiscent of LucasArts’ golden age in the 90s, with titles like Full Throttle and Grim Fandango serving as apt comparisons.

The narrative distinguishes itself through its originality and surprising twists. Deeper thematic elements quickly emerge upon closer inspection. The game addresses complex topics such as loss, death, and grief with an impressive balance of humor and sensitivity.

Currently, Prim is exclusively available for PC and Mac. It’s unfortunate that a Nintendo Switch port isn’t available, as its portability would be a welcome addition. The game exhibits modest system requirements, with a recommended configuration of 8GB RAM and DirectX12 support.

While controller support is implemented, a mouse and keyboard configuration is recommended for optimal playability. A helpful “highlight interactables” feature is also included, revealing all clickable elements within the environment.

Despite the presence of this feature, the solution to certain puzzles can be somewhat obscure, occasionally leading to moments of frustration. In some instances, the required precision for interaction proved overly sensitive, causing brief periods of being stuck.

In conclusion, Prim is a worthwhile experience. This charming title is available at an accessible price point, and its strengths outweigh its minor shortcomings.
