We’re back at the test rig, and this time we’re evaluating a new product: PowerA‘s latest officially licensed Xbox controllers for Xbox One and Series X/S. The packaging presents the controller cleanly and efficiently, immediately drawing attention to the product itself. A unique “reveal” door allows a clear view of the controller through the transparent packaging. For this review, we examined the Metallic Red Camo and Metallic Ice editions.

The first question many will likely have is: “Who buys a wired controller in 2021?” It’s a valid point. However, this controller offers a compelling experience, and the wired connection provides distinct advantages. The controller’s ergonomic design ensures a comfortable grip. It features two easily accessible, programmable buttons on the back. Additionally, it includes integrated volume control for headsets utilizing a 3.5mm connection, enabling convenient audio adjustments directly from the controller. Overall, this is a solid controller that provides a professional feel, and it’s available at an attractive price point ($35 via PowerA’s website, which translates to approximately 350-399 SEK including Swedish taxes).

As someone with extensive online gaming experience, I consider this to be among the best controllers I’ve tested. For FPS enthusiasts, the two programmable buttons offer a significant advantage for actions such as weapon switching, reloading, and executing skill checks. But the key benefit lies in the wired connection, which eliminates the input latency inherent in wireless technologies. This means near-instantaneous response to button presses. In competitive online gaming, this responsiveness can be a crucial factor in securing victories.

The PowerA Enhanced Wired Controller has the potential to significantly improve online gaming performance. The only minor drawback observed was that the LT- and RT-trigger buttons have a slightly “plasticky” feel and offer less resistance compared to the original Xbox controller. However, this does not detract significantly from the overall gaming experience.
In conclusion, I highly recommend this controller to gamers seeking a stylish, affordable, and responsive solution for Xbox gaming.

Footnote: The Enhanced Wired Controller will be available in approximately 20 different colors via PowerA’s website. The launch date and specific pricing for the Swedish market are yet to be determined at the time of publication.
