Review: Planet Coaster – Console Edition

av Henric Brandt

As previously stated, I am not particularly fond of games that demand more meticulous management than relaxation. Many titles require constant attention to detail, ensuring the happiness and prosperity of in-game entities. When Planet Coaster: Console Edition arrived for review, I initially anticipated a straightforward “build roller coasters” experience. However, my assumptions were quickly dispelled.

Planet Coaster: Console Edition represents the console adaptation of the PC title, Planet Coaster, originally launched in 2016. This iteration features enhanced graphics and new gameplay mechanics. The game empowers players to construct and manage their own amusement park, controlling aspects from attraction selection and landscaping to pricing strategies. While the initial prospect of managing every detail and ensuring customer satisfaction induced a slight apprehension, I soon discovered that managing Planet Coaster is an enjoyable endeavor.

I quickly became engrossed in the intricate details, and beyond the over 700 pre-built sections, the game allows for the creation of custom components using individual building blocks. Upon designing and decorating a new attraction, players have control over pricing and overall park admission fees. Evaluating the attraction’s performance and identifying areas for improvement is straightforward.

Furthermore, players can interact with individual visitors to solicit feedback on their experiences. This direct feedback mechanism facilitates prompt identification and resolution of any issues. Observing the (hopefully) satisfied park patrons is also a rewarding aspect of the gameplay.

A notable limitation of Planet Coaster: Console Edition lies in the precision afforded by the game controller. Mouse and keyboard controls would likely enhance aiming and placement accuracy, particularly during custom design and construction. Moreover, the extensive array of buttons and menus, encompassing construction, economics, and customer service, can present a complex management challenge.

The game exhibited satisfactory performance on the Xbox One X (the tested platform), and a complimentary Xbox Series X patch is available for players seeking an enhanced visual experience. Additional information can be found in our Xbox Series X test.

In conclusion, Planet Coaster: Console Edition is an engaging simulation game featuring competent voice acting and accessible tutorials. The game offers extensive replayability, with continuous opportunities for park expansion and the creation of innovative attractions. Despite initial reservations, this “job” proved surprisingly enjoyable. However, the suboptimal console controls and the complexity of simultaneous management detract from a perfect score, preventing it from being an absolute must-have title.
