Paper Trail presents a unique puzzle adventure set within a world constructed entirely of paper, focusing on the theme of self-discovery and leaving home. Players assume the role of Paige, guiding her through a world that can be manipulated by folding its very structure to create new pathways. Progress is achieved by interacting with the environment: dragging objects, illuminating areas, and strategically moving stone blocks. While initially appearing simplistic, the game world gradually unfolds to reveal increasingly complex challenges and surprises.

Drawing inspiration perhaps from the fold-in feature of MAD magazine, Newfangled Games has developed Paper Trail with a distinctive mechanic. The game distinguishes itself through its innovative approach, offering players a fresh perspective on puzzle-solving within a cleverly designed world.
Paper Trail employs a clean and vibrant visual style, presented from a top-down perspective. To maintain its paper aesthetic, the game utilizes a purely two-dimensional design, eschewing 3D effects. The game was tested on both Nintendo Switch and iOS (iPhone). Paper Trail performs well on the Switch in both docked and handheld modes. The touch screen functionality in handheld mode provides an intuitive control scheme for folding the game world. The iOS version relies entirely on touch controls; however, the absence of joystick support for character movement may be a drawback for some players.

The game’s puzzles begin with straightforward mechanics but escalate in complexity. The option to preview the solution for each fold offers accessibility, though it also presents a temptation to bypass strategic thinking. Players can choose the extent to which they utilize these hints, influencing the overall challenge.
Paper Trail incorporates a narrative element, revealed through interactions with various characters. The developers opted for a unique approach to dialogue, using a form of gibberish accompanied by subtitles. However, the highly articulate nature of this gibberish can inadvertently detract from the experience, potentially becoming distracting or even humorous when it likely was not intended. Consequently, muting the audio during extended dialogues may be preferable for some players.

In conclusion, Paper Trail is a recommendable title, delivering a stimulating and enjoyable experience with a distinctly original core mechanic.
