For men who prefer a clean-shaven look, shaving is a frequent task, often performed multiple times per week, or even daily for optimal smoothness. This can be a moment of quiet reflection or a stressful necessity that can, unfortunately, result in skin irritation. As someone who isn’t particularly fond of razors – despite acknowledging their speed and smoothness – due to their potential for causing skin abrasion, I’ve found Panasonic’s S900 shaver, the ES-LV9U, to be a superior alternative. However, its cleaning process is somewhat noisy, and its size isn’t ideal for travel, even when omitting the cleaning dock. This brings us to the new S900 Panasonic ES-PV3B, a premium shaver featuring the same five-blade system as its larger counterpart, but in a compact form factor designed for frequent travelers and those who prefer to pack efficiently.

Upon unboxing the ES-PV3B, its premium quality is immediately apparent. From the shaver itself, a well-designed, ergonomic device, to the comprehensive set of included accessories: a protective case, USB-C cable with a USB-C charger, a cleaning brush, and appliance oil. While these accessories may not be individually expensive, their inclusion provides a complete and convenient user experience. While packing-conscious users may opt for a multi-charger for simultaneous device charging, Panasonic appropriately includes a dedicated charger, while also advising against the use of unverified third-party chargers to ensure product safety and optimal performance.

So, what is the shaving experience with the ES-PV3B like? Quite pleasant, actually. Holding the uniquely shaped device might feel unusual at first, but the resulting shave is comparable to that of its larger sibling. The close shave is likely attributable to the nano-polished blades, precisely angled at 30 degrees. Similar to the full-sized model, achieving a perfectly clean shave on the neck and under the chin can be challenging. While ultimately successful, it often requires multiple passes, ideally in varying directions, to address the fine hairs that grow in different patterns. This can occasionally lead to redness or irritation, and the ES-PV3B is marginally more prone to this than the ES-LV9U. However, this difference is minor and doesn’t detract from its effectiveness as a travel-friendly substitute. Post-shave skincare, such as aftershave balm or aloe vera, is recommended.

Given the absence of a self-cleaning and sharpening dock, maintaining blade sharpness on the ES-PV3B was a key consideration. Panasonic asserts that the blades are designed to maintain optimal condition for up to 5 years under typical usage. Routine maintenance involves washing and lubricating the shaver after each use, which is facilitated by its IPX7 water resistance rating, allowing for rinsing under a tap and even temporary submersion in shallow water.

Summary Panasonic ES-PV3B
The ES-PV3B carries a price tag approaching 4,000 SEK, which represents a significant investment for a shaver. However, it delivers a genuine premium experience that will be appreciated by shaver enthusiasts, especially during travel for leisure, work, or compact packing for film shoots or camping trips. Battery life is excellent, USB-C charging allows for convenient power bank replenishment (essential for outdoor use), and performance is impressive considering its size. The compact design eliminates the need to pack a bulky shaver. While a razor might be lighter, it requires shaving foam and can be more abrasive to the skin.
The ES-PV3B is a premium-priced device that may not be essential for everyone. However, for those who prefer electric shavers and frequently travel in a compact and efficient manner, it represents a worthwhile and welcome travel companion.
Footnote: This device is also available in an all-white color variant, designated as the ES-PV6B. The only difference is the color; the functionality remains identical, despite the different model number.
