The Panasonic electric toothbrush, officially the Panasonic EW-DP52-K Sonic Vibration Toothbrush (hereafter referred to as the Panasonic EW-DP52-K for brevity), garnered our attention for several key reasons:
Firstly, the market is largely dominated by Oral-B, alongside other notable suppliers such as Philips and Ordo, positioning Panasonic as a compelling underdog. Secondly, the incorporated Sonic Vibration technology, which utilizes sound vibrations to enhance cleaning efficacy, presents an interesting and relatively uncommon approach. Thirdly, the brush head design, diverging from Oral-B’s rotary approach with a more traditional form factor, prompts an evaluation of its potential advantages and disadvantages. Overall, we found the toothbrush commendable, though certain aspects could be improved.
In the box
Panasonic has delivered a device with a demonstrably successful design. The toothbrush, charging stand, and overall aesthetics are stylistically appealing, exhibiting a refined look compared to many competing products. While the small silver plate beneath the toothbrush is prone to staining, it is less severe than anticipated and easily cleaned. In short, it is an attractive device.
Five brushes…
The package includes five distinct brush heads, each designed for a specific purpose.
- Extra fine – Designed to access the spaces between teeth and gums.
- Compact multi-fit – Designed for interdental cleaning.
- Anti-discoloration – A versatile brush head for comprehensive cleaning.
- Pointed – For cleaning hard-to-reach areas.
- Silicone – A soft brush intended for gentle gum cleaning.
Mirroring Panasonic’s approach with other personal care products, such as their epilator and multishape trimmer, the included accessories are plentiful, bordering on excessive. However, the benefit lies in the user’s ability to identify the accessories best suited to their individual needs over time. This has been our experience with the Panasonic EW-DP52-K; while some brushes may see limited use, others will become integral to the user’s preferred cleaning routine. A travel case is also included, adding to the product’s value.
…and five programs

While the names of the various programs are generally self-explanatory, consulting the manual is recommended, as Panasonic provides detailed instructions for each brush and program combination. The primary distinctions between the programs lie in their duration, intensity, and vibration pattern, in addition to their intended purpose. The available programs are listed below.
- REGULAR – Designed for cleaning the gum pockets and the area between gums and teeth.
- W-CLEAN – Standard cleaning mode.
- STAINOFF – For stain removal.
- W-GUMCARE – Gum care (recommended for use without toothpaste).
- SOFT – Utilizes the back of the stain removal brush for tongue cleaning.
Panasonic deserves commendation for employing a consistent charging system across multiple products in their personal care range, utilizing a standardized power cord. This is a welcome feature, as it reduces cable clutter and simplifies travel arrangements. The Panasonic EW-DP52-K exhibits good battery performance, with the charge level decreasing by only one increment (from three to two and a half) after one week of use by two adults. While the unit is new, this aligns with our experiences with other Panasonic products, where battery life has not presented any issues.
How does it feel and does it get clean?
Using the Panasonic EW-DP52-K provides a unique experience, particularly due to its Sonic Vibration technology. One tester initially experienced a tingling sensation that was almost overwhelming, while the other was unaffected. After several weeks of use, the tingling sensation largely subsided, suggesting an adaptation period. Similarly, the brushing action differs from Oral-B’s rotary motion; the Panasonic EW-DP52-K brush head oscillates laterally, emulating a traditional toothbrush. While the oscillations are subtle and rapid, the overall sensation is distinct, neither positive nor negative, but simply different.
A distinct advantage of the traditional brush head design is the improved accessibility to interdental spaces. The Panasonic EW-DP52-K effectively transforms into a high-performance traditional toothbrush, encouraging a brushing technique similar to that used with a manual toothbrush. Employing a “brushing” motion yields the best results, resulting in a pleasantly refreshing experience. Furthermore, each of the five brush heads corresponds to a specific cleaning mode on the toothbrush, modulating the oscillation pattern for optimal performance. As with the accessories, users will likely discover a preferred mode over time.
Addressing the fundamental question: does it clean effectively? The answer is a resounding yes. Especially when employing a strategic combination of the various brush heads provided by Panasonic. Our preferred configuration involved using the W-CLEAN program with the Compact Multi Brush, followed by the Point Brush. Supplementing this routine with dental floss should satisfy even the most discerning dentist.
What do we dislike?
Program selection on the toothbrush relies on repeated button presses to cycle through the available options. Accidentally overshooting the desired program necessitates visually confirming the current mode in a mirror, which can lead to splashing and, in some cases, restarting the selection process. While this may seem minor, the inherent inconvenience during a task as routine as brushing teeth is noteworthy. A more intuitive selection method would be preferable. This may become less of an issue with familiarity, however the Oral-B system felt more intuitive from the start.
A notable omission is the inclusion of a pressure sensor, which would alert the user to excessive brushing force. This feature would enhance safety, especially when the toothbrush is used by younger family members.

Conclusion Panasonic EW-DP52-K
The Panasonic EW-DP52-K is a competent product, although its suitability may vary depending on individual preferences. The subtle tingling sensation associated with the Sonic Vibration technology persisted for one of our testers. While this may be a matter of acclimation, individuals with sensitive teeth may experience discomfort. Beyond this, the brushes provide a satisfying interdental cleaning experience, and the Point brush stands out as a particularly effective tool, where the sonic vibrations contribute significantly to improved cleaning.
The Panasonic EW-DP52-K occupies a mid-range price point. While approximately 1000 SEK cheaper than Oral-B’s flagship model, numerous models exist across a wide range of prices. In conclusion, the Panasonic EW-DP52-K presents a stylish and capable electric toothbrush, offering a viable alternative to Oral-B with its unique characteristics. We conclude this review with a positive impression.
