Review: Orbi RBK852 AX6000

av senses.se

Netgear Orbi is the company’s mesh Wi-Fi solution designed for users seeking stable and high-speed wireless connectivity without the need for a router with an aggressive aesthetic (like the Nighthawk AX12) or complex configuration.

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 AX6000 represents the latest iteration of the model, featuring support for Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax). While we have previously examined an Orbi model on our YouTube channel, this version incorporates Wi-Fi 6, a forward-looking connection technology. Further details on Wi-Fi 6 can be found in our review of the AX12.

Netgear highlights the following key features for the Orbi RBK852 AX6000:

  • Reliable Wi-Fi Performance
  • Coverage up to 465 sqm
  • Speeds up to 6 Gbps
  • Support for up to 100 connected devices

These specifications suggest a robust system, so let’s proceed with the evaluation. The initial setup involves installing the Orbi app on a smartphone, scanning the QR code located on the Orbi unit, and adhering to the step-by-step instructions provided. The process is streamlined and intuitive.

Following the installation of the primary router, the next step is to configure the satellite unit. Orbi systems operate on a main router and satellite configuration, with satellites strategically positioned to maximize coverage throughout the premises. The Orbi app provides guidance on optimal satellite placement.

The satellite unit was identified within a few minutes, preparing the system for testing. The entire installation process was completed in under fifteen minutes, demonstrating its ease of use. Users comfortable with installing smartphone applications should find the Orbi setup straightforward.

Post-installation, an initial review of the Orbi app reveals limited configuration options. Encryption type, password settings, and guest network control constitute the majority of available settings. However, users can access a more comprehensive web interface, offering a wider array of configuration options typically found on modern routers (available in Swedish).

It’s important to note the substantial physical size of the Orbi units.

Consequently, the Orbi RBK852’s dimensions may make it less discreet compared to mesh units from competitors. However, strategic placement, such as within a bookshelf, can effectively integrate the units into the home environment without compromising performance.

Performance testing commenced in the same room as the main router, yielding wireless speeds consistent with wired connections at 250/250 Mbit/s. Throughout the house, wireless speeds remained within 10-15% of the wired performance. The test environment consisted of a 160 sqm house across three floors, with the main router on the first floor and the satellite on the third. Moving the satellite between the second and third floors did not result in noticeable differences in coverage or speed. While speed decreased when moving outside the house, the overall range remained impressive.

The system was subjected to a stress test involving simultaneous HD video streams on multiple devices alongside large downloads of Linux distributions via torrents. The Orbi RBK852 handled the load without issue, maintaining uninterrupted performance despite maximizing the available bandwidth. Many less capable routers struggle with multiple concurrent streams, particularly when coupled with high-speed torrent activity. This highlights the investment Netgear has made in the Orbi RBK852’s processing power.

The Netgear Orbi RBK852 AX6000 system has been under evaluation for several weeks, incorporating a variety of devices, including Xbox consoles, Google Stadia, and the latest iPhone 11 Pro Max. The most notable observation is the system’s consistent and reliable performance. Connectivity felt consistently responsive, irrespective of network load or the number of connected devices.

To further assess the capabilities of the Netgear Orbi RBK852 AX6000, the system was deployed in an office environment with a faster fiber connection of 700/700 Mbit/s.

Devices supporting Wi-Fi 6 consistently achieved speeds exceeding 500 Mbit/s, while older devices were unable to reach the same performance levels.

Is the Netgear Orbi RBK852 AX6000 without drawbacks? Unfortunately, no. The primary concern is the price. The system is a significant investment, with a two-unit package (main router + one satellite) retailing for approximately SEK 9,200 at the time of this review. Expanding to a three-unit configuration, which appears to be the current stock availability, increases the cost to around SEK 12,000.

Many competitors offer systems at significantly lower price points. While these alternatives may lack Wi-Fi 6 and the extreme performance of the RBK852, the cost savings are considerable. The Netgear Orbi RBK852 delivers an exceptionally smooth, fast, and future-proof solution; however, its price prevents us from awarding it top marks.
