Review: OlliOlli World

av Henric Brandt

Like many others, I own a skateboard, though it’s primarily used for filming skating these days. While I never achieved a high skill level, I still cherish the fun memories. However, I haven’t been particularly drawn to skateboarding games in general, despite their abundance. When the trailer for OlliOlli World appeared, I was intrigued by its promise of a slightly different skateboarding experience. It’s been some time since OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood was released, and I was curious to see the innovations in this iteration.

Welcome to Radlandia! The reigning skateboarding guru is preparing to relinquish their title, presenting you with an opportunity to claim it. Be warned, however, that the path to victory will be challenging. Mastering every facet of skateboarding is essential to have any chance of succeeding.

OlliOlli World distinguishes itself with a lighthearted approach. The visuals are creatively designed, and the narrative delivers humor and engaging scenarios. As a side-scroller, gameplay progresses from left to right. Players have access to a wide array of button combinations and maneuvers that must be learned to successfully navigate the courses. The game offers clear and concise tutorials for each new technique, providing opportunities to practice before tackling more complex levels.

While OlliOlli World utilizes relatively straightforward controls, mastering them can present an initial challenge. The absence of a dedicated jump button, with the joystick handling trick execution via directional inputs (up, down, right, or left), requires precise timing. Releasing the joystick executes the trick, demanding rapid execution. As the difficulty increased, stringing together trick jumps proved problematic due to this control scheme. A potential alternative would be mapping trick selection to the joystick and execution to a separate button, potentially improving responsiveness.

The game also offers engaging online multiplayer, allowing players to compete against each other. Customization options are available to personalize your avatar, contributing to a unique and individual gaming experience.

Once acclimated to the controls, OlliOlli World delivers exceptionally engaging and addictive gameplay. Its compelling “just one more try” quality is significantly pronounced; once immersed, it becomes difficult to disengage. Therefore, OlliOlli World receives a strong recommendation – welcome to Radlandia!
