Review: NZXT – Relay (Speakers, Subwoofer, Mix & Headphones)

av Henric Brandt

Modern computers serve a multitude of purposes, from professional tasks and entertainment like streaming movies and playing games, to facilitating online meetings. While speakers are preferred in many scenarios, headphones are often necessary in others. This frequently results in the cumbersome task of repeatedly connecting and disconnecting audio devices.

The Relay series from NZXT offers a solution to this issue with an innovative approach. What initially appears to be a straightforward switch possesses significantly more functionality. This review assesses all four products collectively, though they are also available for individual purchase.

Relay – Speakers (80W)

Upon unboxing the Relay speakers, their exceptional quality is immediately apparent. Each speaker weighs three kilograms and features a robust construction, complete with a rubberized base to minimize vibrations. The surface finish provides a premium feel. Eschewing standard 3.5mm connectors, the rear panel features dedicated single-wiring connections for positive and negative terminals, similar to those found on high-end speakers. The right speaker houses all inputs and outputs, including the integrated amplifier. This speaker also provides connections for the Subwoofer and the Switchmix (described further below). A push button on the rear panel controls power, and a volume control is also present.

With a maximum output of 80W, the speakers deliver a clear and powerful sound even without a dedicated subwoofer. While a small subwoofer is integrated into the design, its bass response is understandably limited.

Relay – Subwoofer (140W)

The Relay Subwoofer effectively complements the speakers, enhancing the lower frequencies. Weighing approximately five kilograms, the subwoofer remains stable on the floor due to its rubberized feet. It delivers a maximum output of 140W with a frequency range of 45-150Hz. The rear panel offers controls for volume, bass intensity, and phase adjustment between 0-180 degrees. Connecting the subwoofer to the speakers is straightforward. Despite its relatively large dimensions (21 x 25 x 31cm), it occupies a comparable amount of space to other gaming speaker subwoofers.

The subwoofer provides a balanced sound profile, adapting to the overall volume level. At lower volumes, its presence is subtle, while higher volumes allow it to deliver a more pronounced bass response. Unlike some lower-quality subwoofers that produce a constant rumble, the Relay Subwoofer maintains a proportionate output relative to the main volume.

Relay – Headphones (DTS:X)

The Relay Headphones share the same premium aesthetic as the other products in the series. They are lightweight and provide a comfortable fit, even during extended use. When used with a PC, the DTS:X mode enables an immersive simulated surround sound experience. A minor drawback is that the bass response could be more pronounced.

Reproducing both high and low frequencies accurately is a challenge for headphone design. The Relay Headphones excel in treble reproduction, avoiding harshness even at high volumes. The bass performance is adequate, providing sufficient low-end fill, although a slightly stronger bass presence would be preferable.

The microphone is detachable and can be controlled via a dongle integrated into the headphone cable, which also includes volume adjustment.

Relay – Switchmix

While the aforementioned products offer enhanced quality compared to similar alternatives, the Relay – Switchmix introduces a truly unique feature. More than just a headphone stand, the Switchmix acts as a central control unit. It provides master volume control for all connected devices, memorizing independent volume settings for speakers and headphones. Lifting the headphones from the stand automatically mutes the speakers, enabling seamless transitions between audio outputs without manual switching or cable management. Furthermore, it features a built-in chat mix function to adjust the balance between game audio and voice communication.

Initially, the Switchmix might seem superfluous. However, its ability to facilitate quick and effortless transitions between speakers and headphones proves invaluable in various situations, particularly during online calls. The ability to quickly monitor audio through both headphones and speakers is also beneficial when working with film projects. The primary design goal is to create a streamlined user experience for gaming sessions, minimizing downtime associated with audio device switching.

Optimal use of the Switchmix volume control requires careful calibration of the individual device volumes (subwoofer, speakers, headphones, and computer). Setting each device volume to maximum (excluding the subwoofer) allows for comprehensive control from a single point. The accompanying software provides extensive customization options for fine-tuning the audio experience (PC only).

The system is designed to automatically manage audio output when the computer is powered on or off. However, occasional synchronization issues may occur, which can be easily resolved by using the power button on the back of the right speaker.

In conclusion, the NZXT Relay products represent a compelling offering. Evaluating them as a cohesive system highlights the primary drawback: the cost. While bordering on “expensive,” the overall value justifies the investment. The combined price for all four components exceeds 6,000 kronor at the time of this review. Individual components can be purchased separately, although the total cost remains consistent.

Despite the relatively high price point, this system stands out as one of the most refined and intelligent audio solutions for gaming computers, with the Switchmix providing a uniquely seamless transition between headphones and speakers.
