Review: NZXT Capsule Mini

av Christoffer Alberti

The NZXT Capsule Mini is a stylish microphone featuring a matte black finish. As the name suggests, its compact design makes it a portable and unobtrusive option. Weighing just 544.3 grams, its size is well-suited for both home studio environments and on-the-go use.

The microphone arrives securely packaged and pre-mounted on a robust, weighted metal table stand. The added weight of the stand provides stability, preventing unwanted movement or accidental falls. A USB-C to USB-A cable is included for straightforward connectivity to the microphone and your computer. For users who prefer boom arm mounting, a microphone thread adapter is also provided, a valuable addition.

The NZXT microphone is designed with user-friendliness in mind, particularly for gamers. This is reflected in features such as the integrated AUX input, facilitating easy headphone connection directly to the microphone. Furthermore, a conveniently located rotatable knob allows for quick and intuitive sound level adjustments.

The Capsule Mini delivers audio quality exceeding expectations for its size. The sound capture is notably clear, effectively minimizing extraneous background noise. This makes it a suitable choice for streamers or users who prioritize clear communication in applications like Discord.

This microphone provides sound quality up to 24-bit/48kHz, which is a reasonable specification considering its compact form factor. Its predecessor, the NZXT Capsule released in 2021, offered 24-bit/96kHz audio but features a larger physical footprint. Users should consider whether size or higher sampling rates are a priority.

The microphone’s functionality is enhanced by the NZXT CAM software, available for download at www.nzxt.com. This software enables adjustments to the microphone’s sensitivity, allowing users to fine-tune the audio input level. Experimenting with these settings to match the acoustic properties of the recording environment is recommended. While the software’s sound settings are somewhat limited, future updates may expand these options.

We also evaluated an optional boom arm for an alternative mounting configuration:

The microphone is easily detached from its stand without the need for tools; it simply unscrews by hand. The boom arm can be readily attached to a desk and offers a wide range of adjustability via multiple joints and angles.

In conclusion, the primary advantage of the Capsule Mini is its compact size, making it suitable for travel or space-constrained environments. Furthermore, it provides impressive sound capture quality despite its small dimensions. A desirable improvement would be the expansion of sound settings within the accompanying software. However, this may be addressed in future software revisions.
