Review: No Man’s Sky

av senses.se

Since its reveal alongside the PS4 in 2013, No Man’s Sky has been subject to considerable anticipation. Three years later, the title, currently the second-best-selling game in PS4 history, has arrived. We explore whether a game devoid of a conventional narrative and “ending” can provide a compelling experience.

No Man's Sky PS4

Sean Murray and his team at Hello Games, comprising approximately a dozen individuals, embody the spirit of a small studio with significant aspirations. Their objective was to create a game of immense scale generated procedurally within the game environment itself. Through sophisticated algorithms, the game constructs worlds, creatures, and planets within the user’s console (and PC, given its release on Windows). No Man’s Sky is fundamentally structured around four core elements: exploration (the most prominent), survival (the most challenging), combat, and trade. This structure evokes comparisons to the classic Elite, which, despite its minuscule 22kb footprint, delivered simple 3D graphics and simulated space combat and trading.

Hello Games builds upon the foundation established by David Braben in 1984, delivering a game that, three decades later, captures a similar spirit of exploration. The core gameplay loop involves the player, an avatar without defined identity or appearance (experienced in first-person perspective), stranded on an uncharted planet. Repairing the player’s starship necessitates venturing out to gather minerals and resources. Equipped with a spacesuit, booster pack, and multi-tool for resource extraction and defense, the player gradually rebuilds their ship. Subsequent waypoints lead to new planets and space stations, where interactions with alien entities and mission opportunities await. Acquiring a hyperdrive allows for interstellar travel, enabling trade with alien civilizations and participation in space battles. Extensive planetary exploration constitutes a significant portion of the gameplay.

No Man’s Sky distinguishes itself through its expansive planetary generation capabilities. The game algorithmically generates 18 quintillion planets (18 followed by 30 zeros), offering a virtually limitless universe. Players who discover a planet or lifeform first are granted the privilege of naming them. To date, over 10 million planets, fauna, and flora have been cataloged, representing a fraction of the available possibilities. While No Man’s Sky is designed to be played online, encounters with other players are statistically improbable, akin to winning a lottery.

The game employs voxel-based graphics generation, utilizing algorithms to create combinations of landscapes, flora, fauna, and other elements within predefined parameters. While visually distinct, the graphics are not particularly advanced by contemporary standards. However, the cohesive visual style effectively creates the illusion of a vast, explorable galaxy, reminiscent of the simple geometric representations in Elite. The atmospheric sound design, comprised of synth-based loops, contributes to a rich soundscape. Effective use of surround sound enhances immersion, particularly during combat. The PC version, when paired with high-end hardware capable of 60 fps and 4K resolution, offers a visually superior experience. The PS4 performs adequately, though the computationally intensive procedural generation places demands on the processor. The extent to which the anticipated performance enhancements of the PS4 Neo will improve the NMS experience remains to be seen.

The central question then becomes: is No Man’s Sky an enjoyable game? Initially, the gameplay is relatively straightforward. Players navigate their character and spacecraft, gathering resources from planets. Inventory management is crucial, necessitating prioritization and resource combination. Players must constantly evaluate resource needs: Is there sufficient plutonium for another launch? Can carbon be sacrificed for iron? How many ByPass chips are required? Gradually, players complete assigned tasks, such as repairing components, acquiring resources, and trading goods. Subtly, the game’s charm begins to captivate, drawing players into extended sessions. While not visually stunning or action-packed, No Man’s Sky offers an engaging, almost enchanting, experience. This immersive quality aligns with the developers’ stated goals. While the game may feel like an indie title with a AAA price, it delivers a space exploration experience with considerable longevity.

This title is not for everyone, a point underscored by numerous online reviews. Some members of the editorial staff, who typically prefer narrative-driven games with clear objectives, found themselves drawn into No Man’s Sky. Exploration proved engaging, and trading became a compelling goal. However, the game may feel unfocused or repetitive to some players, lacking clear direction. While an overarching narrative exists, it is presented in a vague manner. Players seeking action and clear directives may find the experience unsatisfying. Conversely, those who enjoy exploration and experimentation, or who have fond memories of Elite, may find this a worthwhile evolution of the genre.
