As previously mentioned in my review of Nordiska Väsen, my engagement with role-playing games began approximately 32 years ago with Drakar och Demoner. This initial experience rapidly expanded to encompass a variety of RPGs, and my enthusiasm for the genre remains strong. However, coordinating in-person sessions has become increasingly challenging, necessitating the adoption of platforms like Zoom to facilitate remote gameplay.
Fria Ligan is also the publisher of the game under consideration today: the horror RPG, Mörk Borg. This concise volume, comprising fewer than 80 pages, presents a surprisingly expansive role-playing experience. The ruleset is streamlined, enabling rapid character creation through dice rolls that determine core attributes and abilities. Players are then immersed in a distinctly bleak and malevolent world. A key differentiator of Mörk Borg is its focus on morally compromised characters; rather than embodying heroic figures, players assume the roles of the setting’s most depraved inhabitants.
The book includes a pre-written adventure to initiate gameplay, and immersion within the setting requires minimal effort. Mörk Borg diverges from traditional RPGs with its grim tone, providing ample opportunity for the game master to create intensely disturbing and unsettling scenarios.
Despite its relatively simple rules, Mörk Borg benefits from prior RPG experience for optimal appreciation. While it can technically serve as an introductory game, newcomers should anticipate the need for supplementary research. The book’s graphic design, reminiscent of a spellbook with varied and skewed fonts, presents a unique aesthetic. However, this stylistic choice occasionally proved distracting when attempting to focus on rule comprehension.
In conclusion, Mörk Borg is a compact and compelling RPG that belies its size, delivering a genuinely immersive horror experience. As such, it warrants a strong recommendation.
