Review: MIG 0-100 Guld

MIG, or Mobile Intelligence Game, is a long-standing Swedish game that many individuals have likely encountered in casual settings, such as during travel or leisure. We recently evaluated both the family-oriented MIG 0-10 and the anniversary edition MIG Silver. Our focus now shifts to perhaps its most premium iteration to date: the anniversary edition MIG 0-100 Guld.

The core concept builds on a successful formula where all answers are numerical, falling between 0 and 100. This seemingly simple premise effectively addresses the common imbalance in trivia games, where some participants possess extensive knowledge while others struggle. Here, every player is encouraged to estimate. The question then arises: does the Guld edition offer significant enhancements beyond its polished aesthetic, or is it merely a repackaging of an existing product? We aim to ascertain this.

Design and Content

The initial impression is undoubtedly made by the packaging. Its gold-foiled finish immediately conveys a sense of premium quality, positioning it as a distinctive gift item rather than a conventional, easily portable game. The graphics on the lid are elegantly designed and clear, featuring icons that subtly indicate the diverse range of questions included.

Upon opening the box, the contents are notably minimalistic, consistent with previous MIG editions. The package includes question cards, a gold-colored cardholder, answer pads, and two compact pencils.

The inclusion of pencils supports the game’s portable nature. However, providing only two feels somewhat limited for groups of five or six players, potentially requiring participants to share or provide their own writing implements. The answer pads are functional, yet, similar to earlier versions, they are consumed more rapidly than anticipated.

Game Rules and Setup

MIG 0-100 incorporates one of the most ingenious quiz mechanics available. A question is posed aloud—for instance, “How many stories tall is the UN skyscraper?”—and all participants, including the reader, silently record their estimate.

This approach effectively eliminates a major drawback of traditional quizzes: player inactivity. All participants remain engaged throughout, as there is no waiting for individual turns. Points are awarded based on the absolute difference between a player’s guess and the correct answer. For example, if a player guesses 67 and the correct answer is 39, they receive 28 points. The objective is to accumulate the fewest points possible. A distinct advantage is the accrual of negative points for an exact answer, fostering strategic tension as players weigh the risks of precision against the certainty of a reasonable estimate.

Mirroring its family-friendly counterpart, MIG 0-10, this edition features an integrated system designed to balance the playing field across different age groups, albeit with a unique implementation. The rules outline a structured bonus point system for exact answers: adults receive -10 points, teenagers (14–17 years) get -20, children (10–13 years) are awarded -30, and the youngest players (6–9 years) receive a substantial -40 bonus. While this mechanism doesn’t directly compensate for knowledge disparities in the same manner as the 0-10 version, it offers a significant incentive and a tangible opportunity for younger players to gain ground if they achieve a precise guess. Consequently, the game functions remarkably well in family environments, despite its recommended age rating of 14 and up.

A notable innovation in the Guld edition is the cooperative mode. In this variant, players collaborate against the game itself, represented by difficulty levels such as “Pro” or “World Elite.” Each question card features predetermined target scores (differences) that these fictional opponents would achieve. The group collectively discusses and submits a single answer, and if their calculated difference is lower than the opponent’s score, they win the round.

The Questions

The Guld edition comprises approximately 700 questions, representing a reduction compared to standard editions, which typically feature around 1,000 questions. This clearly indicates a strategic focus on quality and relevance over sheer volume. However, for frequent players, there is a potential for questions to be repeated more quickly than desired.

The questions offer a balanced blend of general knowledge and analytical thinking. Success rarely hinges on precise recall but rather on the ability to formulate a reasonable estimate. A typical example is: ‘How many years after its US launch did Coca-Cola come to Sweden?’, requiring players to deduce an approximate answer.

Conclusion

MIG 0-100 Guld proves to be a highly engaging and socially inclusive party game. Its fundamental strength lies in effectively neutralizing the inherent knowledge advantage often held by dedicated trivia enthusiasts. Through its estimation mechanic, players across generations—from a grandparent to a teenager or an expert—can compete on a relatively even footing. The introduction of the cooperative mode is a significant enhancement, rendering the game both contemporary and adaptable.

For consumers prioritizing the maximum number of questions for their investment, the white or orange editions represent a more cost-effective option. However, for those seeking a more refined gift or who appreciate the dynamic of team-based play against the game, the Guld edition stands as a compelling choice for a game night.
