Review: Mario + Rabbids – Sparks of Hope

av senses.se

The original Mario + Rabbids (Kingdom Battle) stands as one of the most compelling, yet perhaps underappreciated, titles released on the Nintendo Switch. Its release timing early in the console’s lifecycle might have contributed to initial player hesitancy in understanding its unique blend of Nintendo’s iconic characters, Ubisoft’s zany Rabbids, and a turn-based strategy system reminiscent of XCOM. This bold proposition from the French studio to the Japanese gaming giant proved to be a resounding success. Now, five years later, we have Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope, and we’ve ventured across the galaxy to bring you our impressions.

Sparks of Hope continues the narrative where the first game concluded. Our heroes, alongside their Rabbid counterparts, are tasked with traversing the galaxy to confront the malevolent Cursa and its scheme to engulf the cosmos in darkness and purple ooze. The journey leads to diverse planets (evoking memories of Super Mario Galaxy), and this time introduces enhanced movement during battles, more expansive environments, and strategic utilization of Sparks (Rabbid-Luma hybrids).

Developed by Ubisoft Milano and Ubisoft Paris, this sequel refines nearly every aspect of its predecessor. The visuals are notably improved, boasting intricate details that imbue each character with unique characteristics and animations. While visually impressive, this detail occasionally impacts performance, resulting in frame rate fluctuations in certain areas. Each location offers a small, explorable environment, providing a sense of freedom absent from the more linear paths of the original game (with the exception of specific treasure hunts). While the narrative serves as a backdrop, the core gameplay revolves around its engaging combat mechanics.

The battles, already a highlight of the first game, have been further refined in this iteration. While retaining the turn-based structure, players now have greater control during attack phases. For example, Mario’s dual pistols allow targeting two separate enemies (within range) or focusing fire on a single target. Team jumps offer player-controlled character movement, providing more precise landing options compared to the more rigid, grid-based system of the previous title. This lends a more action-oriented feel to the combat. The acquired Sparks can be upgraded to provide offensive capabilities and protection against various elemental attacks and damage types. Strategic team composition is now complemented by the tactical depth of experimenting with different Sparks. The previous restriction requiring Mario and a Rabbid in each trio has also been removed, granting complete freedom in team selection. This, combined with the ability to equip each character with two unique Sparks, unlocks a vast array of combinations, rewarding players who are willing to experiment and optimize their strategies.

The environments are more diverse and numerous than before. One moment you might be riding atop a giant ray, the next exploring a desert planet, navigating icy terrains with strong winds, or battling on the roof of a speeding train. While the core gameplay system remains familiar (a drastic overhaul would likely be detrimental), the variations and enhanced movement in battles create a more immersive experience, drawing players deeper into the game world.

Once again, Ubisoft deserves commendation for their imaginative work. From a studio that had been releasing similar open-world games for several years, Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope presents a refreshing and distinct experience that Switch owners should seriously consider. With DLC packs and updates planned through 2023, those who enjoyed the first game should consider investing in the Gold edition for the most comprehensive content at the best value.
