Review: LG UltraGear 27GR95QE

av Christoffer Alberti

We at senses are pleased to present a review of a product from the prominent Korean company LG. LG consistently delivers high-quality products with stylish design at competitive prices. Interestingly, in 1995, the company transitioned from Lucky Goldstar to its current name, LG Electronics. Today, LG officially represents “Life’s Good.” The product under evaluation is the LG UltraGear 27GR95QE gaming monitor.

This 27-inch monitor leverages OLED technology to provide exceptional image quality. It features a QHD resolution of 2560×1440, a 240Hz refresh rate, and a rapid 0.03 ms response time. This display is well-suited for fast-paced gaming, particularly first-person shooters (FPS) like Counter-Strike, where a high refresh rate is paramount. To clarify, the refresh rate, measured in Hertz (Hz), indicates the number of images the screen can display per second. Therefore, this monitor can render 240 images per second. The evolution from older CRT monitors, with their limited refresh capabilities, to this level of performance is a testament to technological advancement. For further insight, consult our guide on the relationship between Hz and FPS. We also evaluated YouTube playback at 1440p60, the highest quality available to standard users. The resulting image was noticeably sharper and more vibrant compared to a typical laptop display. This monitor could serve well in smaller environments, such as bedrooms, for immersive movie or video viewing. While the release of Grand Theft Auto VI is anticipated, this screen’s brightness, clarity, and color fidelity would offer an engaging experience. The monitor supports HDR10 and has a typical brightness of 200 cd/m².

The monitor incorporates adaptive image synchronization via AMD FreeSync and is also compatible with Nvidia G-Sync, effectively supporting Variable Refresh Rate (VRR). Its high frame rate and low input lag make it a strong contender for gaming. Connectivity options include a DisplayPort 1.4 input and two HDMI 2.1 inputs. A USB Type-B port facilitates connection to a USB hub, software updates, and calibration using LG Calibration Studio. While built-in speakers are absent, TOSLINK and a 3.5 mm four-pole headset jack are available for audio output. The lack of USB-C connectivity is somewhat surprising, given the monitor’s price point and the prevalence of USB-C in modern devices.

The V-shaped stand provides stability and contributes to the monitor’s overall aesthetic. A V-shaped cable clamp located behind the screen aids in cable management. The assembled monitor offers counterclockwise rotation and horizontal/vertical tilt adjustments. Height adjustment is also possible, with a total range of 110 mm.

A single button on the underside controls power and provides access to a quick menu. The inclusion of a small remote control, uncommon for monitors, simplifies adjustment of settings.

The monitor incorporates rear RGB lighting to enhance the gaming atmosphere. The controller enables customization of lighting effects. Preset settings for light and sharpness are available within the menu to optimize the experience for specific games. The menu also includes image cleaning and pixel cleaning functions, as well as a screen shift feature to mitigate burn-in. A more comprehensive manual detailing best practices for maintaining the screen would be beneficial, given the investment required for this high-end display.

In conclusion, this LG monitor delivers excellent image quality via its OLED technology, suitable for both gaming and movie viewing. Its stylish design and numerous features are noteworthy. However, this premium experience comes at a premium price, which may be a limiting factor for some. The inclusion of a more detailed user manual would further enhance the user experience, particularly for those less familiar with advanced display technologies.
