The initial fervor surrounding Toys-to-life has diminished significantly since Disney discontinued Disney Infinity (a development that’s regrettable, particularly as version 3.0 was demonstrating considerable potential with its improvements). Concurrently, Activision appears to be adopting a more measured approach to Skylanders, opting to “continue to support Imaginators” instead of releasing a new title this year (the practical implications of this strategy remain to be seen – potential expansions, perhaps?). LEGO Dimensions, since its debut in 2015, has similarly refrained from releasing a completely new game, focusing instead on expansion packs based on LEGO adaptations of popular films and franchises. These have included the classic and 2016 versions of Ghostbusters, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, and now, the theatrical release, LEGO Batman Movie.

The LEGO Movie enjoys considerable popularity, attributable to its brisk pacing and abundance of pop culture references that resonate with both younger and older audiences. LEGO Batman Movie maintains this formula, this time spotlighting the cynically humorous Caped Crusader. While the core Dimension package (required for playing this expansion) includes the Batman figure, this expansion provides Robin and Batgirl.

This expansion pack, analogous to downloadable content (DLC), features six substantial levels, incorporating numerous challenges and intricate puzzles designed to engage players of all ages. Familiarity with the feature film will provide a general understanding of the content; for those who haven’t seen it, we will avoid spoilers and allow you to discover the stories and levels firsthand. Expect a blend of on-foot action, Batmobile sequences, and opportunities to utilize Batman’s detective skills.

Given that LEGO Dimensions retains a significant player base on older platforms (PS3, Xbox 360), these legacy systems impose certain limitations on the complexity of each expansion, preventing them from becoming overly sophisticated due to the technical constraints of nearly decade-old hardware. The experience is, as anticipated, colorful, imaginative, and occasionally exhibits minor glitches.

As is typical, LEGO Dimension expansions carry a relatively high price point; this particular package retails for approximately 450 SEK, approaching the cost of a new, full-priced game. However, the quality is generally high, and for enthusiasts of the film, LEGO games, and the toys-to-life genre, it represents a worthwhile investment.

PS: Concurrently released are two fun packs featuring Knight Rider and the car Kit, along with a silver version of Batman from the LEGO movie (priced at approximately 150 SEK each).
