The Just Dance series has cultivated a substantial fan base since its debut in 2009. Its presence extends into films (notably in Youth) and various aspects of pop culture. The game centers around physical engagement, requiring players to emulate the movements and poses of on-screen dancers to a chosen song. Scoring is predicated on the accuracy of the player’s performance. Expect an engaging, and often energetic, experience as you follow along to tracks such as Dragostea din Tei, Titanium and Can’t Feel My Face. Just Dance 2017 launched last fall across all major platforms (including, for the first time, Windows), and the Switch version mirrors this content – inclusive of the Just Dance Unlimited subscription service, which is complimentary for 90 days upon initial game installation. For those inclined to share their moves, Just Dance TV mode allows users to upload their home performances.
Beyond its physical and rhythmic components, Just Dance provides a means of at-home exercise and serves as an effective party game. Its intuitive design allows immediate participation (simply mirror the on-screen character), while also affording enough precision for competitive play. Smartphone support is included, enabling users without Joy-Cons to connect and use their phones for motion tracking (exercise caution when waving handsets!). The Switch’s Joy-Cons offer accurate motion sensing, representing some of the most precise motion controls currently available.
However, Just Dance 2017 for Nintendo Switch carries a higher price point compared to other platforms. While the Switch is relatively new and development costs may need to be offset, and acknowledging the higher manufacturing cost of game cartridges on Switch, the price increase for functionally equivalent content is a notable point. Despite being designed for multiplayer, Just Dance 2017 can serve as a supplemental workout option for solo players.
