Review: INVINTIX Drekiskip

av senses.se

How does one approach reviewing art? This question has been a recurring topic among our editorial team in recent weeks. Senses has been granted the unique opportunity to be the first media outlet globally to evaluate the Drekiskip, a visually striking keyboard from the boutique Norwegian manufacturer, Invintix. This inaugural model is available as a DIY kit or fully assembled by Tord Andreasen to your specifications.

The Drekiskip presents itself as an aesthetically pleasing keyboard. The primary question we aim to address is: what is the user experience like in practice?

Background to Invintix Drekiskip

The Drekiskip is the culmination of an extensive development process initiated by a keyboard enthusiast with a robust background in computer manufacturing. While many possess specialized interests, true dedication goes far beyond the surface level. During our evaluation of the Drekiskip, we gained a deeper appreciation for the rabbit hole one can descend into within the realm of custom keyboards.

Why is this relevant? It’s important to understand that the Drekiskip, while functioning as a keyboard, occupies a distinct space, setting it apart from even premium gaming keyboards offered by mainstream manufacturers. A direct comparison with keyboards from brands like Asus, Steelseries, or Razer would be inappropriate. The Drekiskip caters to a niche market of custom keyboard enthusiasts who prioritize granular control over every aspect of their typing experience, pursuing the ideal keyboard.

Tord Andreasen, Invintix’s founder, identified a lack of options for enthusiasts in the Nordic region. Given the prevalence of North American and Asian manufacturers, most custom parts adhered to the ANSI standard, incompatible with the ISO standard prevalent in Europe. Invintix aims to address this gap with the Drekiskip.

What is Invintix Drekiskip then?

The Drekiskip is a 75% form factor mechanical keyboard featuring 83 keys, drawing design cues from classic retro keyboards like the IBM Model M and Viking longships (hence its name). The first impression upon unboxing is its substantial weight, clocking in at 2.4kg (dependent on configuration). For context, that is approximately the weight of two MacBook Airs. Connectivity is exclusively USB-C, and the layout is fully configurable via QMK/VIA software, with settings stored locally on the keyboard.

As previously mentioned, components can be ordered individually as a kit for self-assembly, or the configuration can be professionally assembled. We opted for the latter, completing a detailed form specifying approximately thirty different preferences. This included straightforward selections like switch type, as well as nuanced choices regarding stabilizer types for individual keys and acoustic properties. The Drekiskip features a striking metal medallion on its back, inspired by classic Viking art.

What is Drekiskip like to use?

This section could be summarized in a single word: exceptional. Typing on this finely crafted keyboard is a truly remarkable experience. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact source of the constant satisfaction derived from using the Drekiskip, but it stems from a confluence of factors: precise key actuation, a solid chassis, and a distinctive sound profile. The keyboard emits a deep, muted tone unlike any other we’ve encountered. Please refer to the video below for an auditory demonstration. The weight and construction of the Drekiskip impart a sense of solidity, eliminating chassis flex and ensuring stability on the desk.

Initially concerned that our in-house keyboard enthusiasts might be biased by their understanding of the Drekiskip’s construction, we conducted an external evaluation. Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with even non-technical individuals expressing admiration, until the price point was revealed. As anticipated, the approximate price of five thousand kronor proved to be a deterrent for some. However, surprisingly, several individuals remained interested, suggesting it could be a worthwhile long-term investment.

The primary drawback of the Drekiskip is its premium price. For significantly less, one could purchase a keyboard with a broader feature set and connectivity options from a major manufacturer. However, as stated earlier, such comparisons are not truly equitable. Further research into competing custom keyboard manufacturers revealed that the Drekiskip’s price is, in fact, competitive. Many custom keyboard chassis alone exceed the cost of a complete Drekiskip. Furthermore, the Drekiskip offers the distinct advantage of ISO layout compatibility for Nordic users.

Conclusion Invintix Drekiskip

We began by contemplating the nature of reviewing art, a question that remains partially unanswered. Perhaps a definitive answer is unattainable. Art, in this context, encompasses subjective experiences and craftsmanship, aspects not easily quantified by metrics like refresh rate or frequency response. An IKEA rug serves the same fundamental purpose as a designer rug costing significantly more. The Drekiskip embodies art, with Tord from Invintix as the artist. The fact that this art takes the form of a keyboard is secondary. Art transcends traditional boundaries and can be appreciated on one’s desk. Several members of our editorial team will genuinely miss the Drekiskip upon its return to Norway, where another reviewer will have the privilege of experiencing its unique magic.

Invintix provided the review unit. Provision of review samples does not influence our editorial independence. We maintain an objective perspective, prioritizing our readers’ interests.
