Review: I am Setsuna

It is noteworthy that Square Enix, much like Nintendo, demonstrates a continued appreciation for its foundational works. While contemporary JRPGs such as Final Fantasy XV (from the same studio) offer lavish, modern experiences, I am Setsuna reveals that the passion for classic Japanese role-playing games like Final Fantasy VI (VII) and Chrono Trigger remains strong. I am Setsuna possesses a melancholic retro charm, complemented effectively by the Switch’s screen and audio capabilities. The soundtrack is a particular highlight, best experienced with headphones, and despite the option to disable combat exclamations, the game delivers a touching and subtly epic narrative.

The game maintains a dramatic and somewhat somber tone, avoiding comic relief or unnecessary diversions, elements present in comparable titles like Bravely Default. The menu system and analytical combat mechanics are familiar to those experienced with the genre, and relatively intuitive for newcomers, provided they take the time to read the in-game instructions.

This is primarily a role-playing adventure that will resonate strongly with players who engaged with Japanese role-playing games in the nineties. However, it warrants consideration from all fans of the genre. While its graphics and presentation may not be the most cutting-edge, it delivers a compelling story with relatable human narratives, well-suited to the Nintendo Switch. The limitation of the Switch version to 30fps, compared to the PS4 version’s 60fps, is a drawback. It is plausible that the Switch hardware could have supported 60fps for a game of this nature. Technical considerations aside, I am Setsuna remains a compelling title for the Switch, lending itself well to portable play, whether on the couch or outdoors on a summer evening.
