Review: HyperX – Clutch Gladiate RGB

by Henric Brandt

TL;DR

HyperX's Clutch Gladiate RGB controller offers a familiar feel, excellent accuracy, and solid build quality, resembling the Xbox Series X/S controller. It boasts customizable RGB lighting, programmable buttons, and cross-compatibility with PC and Xbox One. While it performs comparably to official controllers and provides a seamless plug-and-play experience, its wired-only nature and surprisingly premium price point for a wired device are notable drawbacks. Does the slick RGB and extra customization justify the cost over a wireless option? Dive in to find out!

The Clutch Gladiate RGB from HyperX makes a strong first impression with its build quality. Its size and design closely resemble the standard controller for the Xbox Series X/S, and also the Xbox One. The buttons offer clear distinction, and the D-pad provides tactile feedback. The textured, rubberized thumbsticks ensure optimal grip.

The rear of the controller features a programming button, enabling customization of various functions, including lighting effects and the two programmable buttons located on the underside. Trigger lock buttons are also present for enhanced control.

Initial testing of the Clutch Gladiate RGB was conducted on an Xbox Series X. Connecting the controller via USB was seamless, with immediate functionality. All standard controller features are replicated on this device. The controller exhibited excellent accuracy, with no discernible input lag or missed actions, providing a familiar user experience. Testing began with Halo Infinite to assess precision. The experience closely mirrored that of the original controller, eliminating any learning curve. Subsequently, Forza Horizon 5 was tested, yielding comparable results. Connecting to a PC and launching The Last of Us Part I proved equally straightforward, with plug-and-play compatibility. The programmable buttons also become relevant on PC. The Clutch Gladiate RGB maintains full compatibility with Xbox One, broadening its range of application.

The Clutch Gladiate RGB from HyperX boasts a highly customizable RGB lighting system. While the default solid red illumination may be excessive for some, adjustments to brightness, pulsation, color cycling, and static color selection allow users to tailor the lighting to their preferences.

The programming interface for customizing functions is intuitive and user-friendly, a significant advantage.

The Clutch Gladiate RGB from HyperX is officially licensed for Xbox, as evidenced by the Xbox logo. However, consumers seeking a budget-friendly alternative to the official wireless controller may find the pricing unexpected. The Clutch Gladiate RGB commands a slight premium over the wireless original, which is somewhat unusual. While programmable features and cross-compatibility with PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S are present, the wired connection lacks the convenience of a wireless design. While the RGB lighting is appealing, its value is subjective and may not justify the added cost for all users.

The Clutch Gladiate RGB from HyperX delivers comparable accuracy and performance to the original controller. The sophisticated and stylish RGB lighting enhances its aesthetic appeal. However, the relatively high price point for a wired controller is a notable drawback.
