HyperX Alloy Origins – A Contender for Mechanical Keyboard Supremacy?

We are pleased to present our first review for senses.se: the HyperX Alloy Origins keyboard, featuring HyperX’s proprietary mechanical switches.
While many keyboard manufacturers opt for Cherry MX mechanical switches, an increasing number are developing their own alternatives.
HyperX’s initial offering is a linear, red mechanical switch characterized by a shorter actuation distance and a rated lifespan of 80 million keystrokes, exceeding the industry standard of 50 million.
However, the first impression upon handling the keyboard is its substantial weight and the evident build quality, both of which are immediately impressive.
Installation – Streamlined and Simple
Installation is straightforward, utilizing a detachable USB-to-USB-C cable. This design allows for easy replacement if the cable becomes damaged. The included cable also exhibits a robust feel. Upon connection, the RGB lighting activates, offering five distinct brightness levels to optimize the gaming experience for various ambient lighting conditions.
All settings are configurable via the NGENUITY software, enabling customization of lighting effects and macros, including per-key lighting control.

Performance and Feel
The core question: How does the keyboard perform in practical use? In short: exceptionally well. After a week of intensive gameplay in Apex Legends and Fortnite, both Liam and I are highly satisfied.
The new red switches offer a tactile and responsive feel, enhancing gameplay. While the more compact form factor required a brief adjustment period compared to our previous, larger keyboards, we now find it difficult to revert to a larger design.
Beyond Gaming: Productivity
To assess its suitability for general office tasks, we enlisted a family member to use the keyboard for a week during her workday. She also expressed satisfaction. The rapid response time improved her typing speed and comfort. Her only observation was that the keyboard produced slightly more sound than a standard keyboard. An additional feature noted during office use was the three-level height adjustment.

Potential Drawbacks of the Alloy Origins
Are there any drawbacks? After careful consideration, we identified the absence of dedicated media controls as a potential con. Some users might also perceive the price as relatively high. However, considering the overall value and performance, the keyboard is competitively priced within its market segment.
