Review: Hellblade – Senua’s Sacrifice

av senses.se

Actor Andy Serkis (known for his digital character work such as Gollum in The Lord of the Rings and Caesar in Planet of the Apes) has collaborated with Ninja Theory. This studio has evolved from a boutique indie game developer to a Microsoft acquisition, potentially leading to future Xbox (and PC) exclusive titles. Ninja Theory previously gained recognition for games such as Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, and the Devil May Cry reboot.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, released on PS4 and PC over a year ago, attracted significant attention. This was not only due to the technical achievement of a small team of 14 developers, but also for its serious and sensitive portrayal of mental illness within a game. Melinda Juergens delivers a compelling performance as Senua, a warrior embarking on a journey to Helheim – the Norse underworld – to revive her deceased lover, Dillion, echoing the Orpheus and Eurydice myth. The game shares surprising similarities with the recent God of War reboot (particularly the intro), a point acknowledged by Cory Barlog of Santa Monica Studios. While the origin of these similarities remains speculative, comparing the scale of God of War, developed by a large team with a substantial budget, to the more indie-driven nature of Hellblade would be inaccurate. However, Hellblade demonstrates that ambition is not solely determined by financial resources.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice‘s similarities to God of War are largely superficial. While Sony’s title is a quintessential action-adventure game, Senua’s Sacrifice is an interactive and deeply personal narrative, leaning towards a puzzle adventure with action elements. The player embodies Senua, a physically and mentally scarred warrior plagued by persistent auditory hallucinations within a Norse mythological setting. Her journey to Helheim involves solving numerous riddles and confronting figures from Norse folklore.

The presentation in Senua’s Sacrifice is exceptional. Ninja Theory maximizes the capabilities of the Unreal 4 engine, delivering impressive character models, stylized environments, and refined details like lighting and foliage. However, Senua’s Sacrifice is a visually dark game, both thematically and literally. During our playthrough, we encountered issues with extensive sections taking place in near-total darkness, which, combined with the game’s HDR gamma control, proved problematic with our Panasonic EZ950 reference OLED display. The Xbox One X version offers the best console experience, featuring a slightly higher resolution than the PS4 Pro and an “enriched” mode that enhances textures, foliage, and shadows while maintaining a consistent 30 fps. Both Xbox One X and S support HDR, a feature absent on the PS4 at the time of writing. A 60 fps mode is available (in image update mode), but the visual fidelity of the “enriched” mode provides a superior overall experience, negating the need for higher frame rates, especially considering that the 60 fps mode can result in dynamic resolution scaling down to 720p. The 4K mode reaches a peak resolution of 3328×1872, but fluctuates during gameplay. Consequently, the enhanced visual effects of the Enriched Mode outweigh the minor resolution gains, making it the recommended setting for Xbox One X owners.

The sound design is equally noteworthy. As Senua’s Sacrifice explores internal struggles, the immersive soundscape creates an unsettling atmosphere, best experienced with high-quality headphones. The voices within Senua’s mind deliver both insults and clues, providing a glimpse into the experience of psychosis or mental illnesses like schizophrenia. With increased visibility of mental health discussions within the gaming community, a game like this can help dismantle stigmas and foster understanding among players.

The perspective and core mechanics of Senua’s Sacrifice echo God of War, but with a greater emphasis on puzzles over action. Players expecting relentless combat may be disappointed, as Senua’s Sacrifice prioritizes a slow, deliberate pace and an interactive narrative exploring darkness and loss. The game offers limited guidance, encouraging experimentation to solve rune-matching puzzles, for instance. While the combat sequences are engaging and the boss encounters are well-designed, the game’s imbalance, favoring puzzle-solving over combat, arguably undermines its strengths. The slow pace and reliance on trial-and-error, especially within the often-dark environments, may deter action-oriented players from experiencing the game’s rewarding aspects.

Summary: Senua’s Sacrifice represents a technical achievement, now available in its definitive console version on Xbox One (X). It is a brave, innovative, and engaging title, but the emphasis on puzzle-solving over action-adventure prevents it from achieving broader appeal as a universally acclaimed classic. It remains, however, a compelling indie experience, offering a personal journey into darkness and introspective puzzle-solving, heavily reliant on visual perception. Given its accessible price point, Senua’s Sacrifice is recommended, particularly for its exceptional audio-visual presentation. A rebalancing of the gameplay, with increased focus on the fluid and engaging combat system, could have elevated the game to modern classic status.
