Review: GXTrust – Rope Light, Light Bars & Hexagon Panels

av senses.se

In this review, we evaluate several LED lighting solutions from GXTrust. As one of the three subsidiaries of Trust International B.V., GXTrust focuses on a comprehensive range of gaming accessories. Recently, they’ve expanded their product line to include three lighting solutions designed for versatile applications, ranging from general room illumination to dedicated gaming setups or even party environments. Unlike lighting systems such as Philips Hue, these GXTrust lights are not designed for subtle or naturalistic lighting. Instead, they offer impactful and stylish lighting designed to make a statement.

After thoroughly testing these lights through assembly, configuration, and extensive use, we’ve identified several key strengths. However, we also noted some shortcomings that impact the overall user experience.

The Common Features

These fixtures share a number of features. The following is a summary of their common functionalities:

All three models offer four control methods: the TrustWifi app, the included remote control, physical buttons on the fixture itself, and voice control via Google Home or Alexa after initial linking. Notably, the digital setup of the GXTrust lights was remarkably straightforward, functioning correctly on the first attempt without any issues.

A significant drawback is the lack of Matter compatibility. This prevents integration with platforms like a Philips Hue bridge for unified lighting control. While the lights can be assigned to rooms within Google Home, effect customization within the Google Home app is not supported. Consequently, users may need to manage multiple apps, depending on their existing smart home ecosystem.

Each fixture includes a library of preset lighting options, including pulsating combinations, flashing effects, static illumination settings, and solid colors. Users can adjust the number of active lights, intensity, and color. This functionality is useful for creating dimmed, low-intensity lighting scenarios, such as nighttime settings.

However, the inability to save custom configurations is a notable limitation. The lack of user-defined presets, such as a specific arrangement of lights with a particular color scheme for night lighting, proves to be both inconvenient and time-consuming.

GXTrust has incorporated some interesting IFTTT-like features. The lights can be controlled based on external parameters. For example, you can configure the lights to activate a specific mode when the local outdoor temperature drops below freezing and switch to an alternative mode above a set temperature.

Control parameters extend beyond temperature to include humidity, wind speed, and general weather conditions. This feature offers potential for creative lighting automation. However, customization is limited by a pre-defined list of actions (White, Color, Scene, or Music) without the ability to specify which color or scene to activate.

All three lights also feature sound-reactive modes, suitable for applications like party or children’s room lighting. These modes function effectively, offering a range of responsiveness. Sensitivity adjustments are available to prevent unintended activation from minor ambient sounds.

GXTrust – Neon Rope Light

The Neon Rope Light offers an elegant aesthetic and is capable of generating smooth, flowing lighting effects. In some instances, it can even produce a calming ambiance, particularly when paired with soft, ambient music, potentially promoting relaxation and creativity.

The Neon Rope Light can be affixed to surfaces using the pre-applied adhesive tape on its back or mounted with screws and small mounting brackets. While adhesive mounting may be tempting, it’s worth considering the potential for wall damage upon removal, as opposed to using screws.

GXTrust – Neon Hexagon Panels

The Hexagon Panels offer a stylish design and can be arranged in various configurations to create impactful patterns. They are interconnected using contact bridges and secured in place with screws.

Assembly is relatively simple and requires minimal tools, although a small screwdriver may be necessary for the included screws. Once installed, the panels can be connected to power. The base kit includes nine modules, and expansion kits of three additional panels are available. While the maximum number of panels that can be connected is unknown, a set of twelve provides significant illumination.

GXTrust – Neon Light Bars

The Neon Light Bars feature a linear design suitable for creating patterns, lettering, or geometric lines. These bars can be easily concealed under window sills, behind monitors, or along room corners. Similar to the Hexagon Panels, they connect via contact bridges, with a slightly different connector design to prevent mixing up connections between the two product lines.

Conclusion – GXTrust – Rope Light, Light Bars & Hexagon Panels

GXTrust offers visually appealing lighting solutions with innovative functionalities. Assembly and basic operation are straightforward. However, the user experience is hampered by limitations in advanced customization options. The absence of features like user-definable light scenes and seamless saving capabilities is a noticeable drawback. Furthermore, the lack of compatibility with external bridges for centralized device management detracts from the overall satisfaction.

In terms of pricing, GXTrust faces competition. For example, Goove offers a product similar to the GXTrust Neon Rope Light at a lower price point (900 SEK for 5 meters) with Matter support. While we have not evaluated Goove’s product, the system-level comparison places GXTrust at a disadvantage. Competitors for the other fixtures also offer Matter compatibility at comparable prices (although Light Bars tend to be more expensive). The lack of Matter support makes the GXTrust offerings seem somewhat overpriced and, unfortunately, a little outdated.

Despite these shortcomings, the GXTrust fixtures are visually striking and effective. They are suitable for interior design, disco lighting, and atmospheric party illumination.

Each product receives the following grade with the following justification:

 GXTrust – Neon Rope Light (Price: 1 500 kronor) – Grade: 6

This product offers a stylish design that complements most rooms. Its flexible form factor facilitates the creation of imaginative lighting effects. However, more compelling alternatives are available at significantly lower prices.

GXTrust – Neon Hexagon Panels (Price: 1 500 kronor) – Grade 7

The design of these panels provides ample opportunity for creating visually appealing patterns and striking combinations. The music-reactive modes are particularly effective at transforming any room into a nightclub environment.

GXTrust – Neon Light Bars (Price: 2 200 kronor) – Grade: 5

These bars are easy to install and integrate into existing decor, allowing for personalized lighting displays. However, the significant price premium compared to the other GXTrust offerings is difficult to justify, as the connections, functions, and lighting capabilities are largely similar. The elevated price is the primary factor impacting the grade, as the features and light quality are satisfactory.
