Gunbrella is situated in a dystopian steampunk setting. The central objective involves understanding the origins and purpose of the Gunbrella itself. The player wields a unique weapon, a hybrid of a firearm and an umbrella, reminiscent of Penguin’s armament in Batman Returns. This allows for gliding, controlled descent, and enhanced jumping capabilities across various platforms. The journey is extensive, but progress is impeded by rebel forces who have seized control of the train network. The player must liberate the area to advance the core mission.

Gunbrella is currently available on PC and Switch. This review is based on the PC version. It’s important to note that the game’s control scheme is significantly more effective with a gamepad. Initial testing with a mouse and keyboard proved challenging, with limited maneuverability hindering early progress. A gamepad enhances both the playability and enjoyment of the game.

The game features a distinctive retro aesthetic. As previously mentioned, switching to a gamepad greatly improved the ease of navigation. While mastering the umbrella mechanics required some initial practice, it ultimately unlocked new gameplay possibilities and elevated the experience from frustrating to engaging.

The narrative is surprisingly deep, distinguishing this title from a standard platformer, which is a definite advantage.

Players will find a wealth of content to explore, and the game structure allows for flexibility in progression, with optional side quests complementing the main storyline.
