av Henric Brandt

According to Wikipedia, Computer Golf!, released in 1978, is considered one of the earliest examples of the golf genre in computer gaming. Now, decades later, Golf Club: Wasteland offers a fresh and innovative take on the established formula.

Set in the near future, Golf Club: Wasteland envisions a scenario where Earth has suffered ecological collapse, prompting humanity’s relocation to Mars. The ultra-wealthy, seeking novel forms of entertainment, return to Earth to play golf amidst the dilapidated ruins of their former home, offering a uniquely dystopian golfing experience.

The game’s mechanics are straightforward, primarily utilizing the left joystick for aiming and power adjustment, and the ‘A’ button (on Xbox) to execute the shot. Unlike conventional golf simulations, Golf Club: Wasteland employs a side-scrolling perspective. This viewpoint is essential for navigating the levels, which often incorporate dilapidated structures and environmental hazards. Upon hitting the ball, the player character automatically moves to its landing position, streamlining movement through the devastated landscapes.

A notable challenge lies in the absence of a shot trajectory preview. Players must rely on intuition and experience to gauge the ball’s flight path and distance based on the power and angle of the shot. This can lead to a degree of trial-and-error, particularly on more complex courses. The precision required for accurate shot placement can sometimes feel lacking, potentially causing frustration as players attempt to fine-tune their technique.

The game offers a story mode where the number of strokes is less critical, allowing players to focus on narrative progression. Alternatively, players can engage in score-based gameplay, striving to complete each course with the fewest possible strokes. Given its relatively low price point, Golf Club: Wasteland provides a substantial amount of replayability.

The game features a clean and aesthetically pleasing visual style, drawing comparisons to Inside. The environments are rich with satirical signage and commentary on contemporary society. Complementing the visuals is an exceptional soundtrack, presented as a futuristic radio program featuring original music and engaging host segments. This audio component elevates the game beyond a simple golf simulation, adding significant depth and atmosphere.

In conclusion, Golf Club: Wasteland offers a compelling and unique experience. While refinements to the core mechanics could enhance the gameplay, the game remains a worthwhile purchase. Golf Club: Wasteland is recommended, particularly for those seeking a distinctive and atmospheric take on the golf genre.
