Review: Glorious – GMMK3

av Henric Brandt

American company Glorious recently launched their new keyboard, the GMMK3 (Glorious Modular Mechanical Keyboard), building upon the foundation of their earlier GMMK2. This iteration enhances customization options, offering a wide array of user-selectable components, potentially leading to a billion unique configurations. At the Glorious event in Denmark, I had the opportunity to configure a personalized GMMK3, opting for a build focused on quiet operation and substantial weight.

Given the highly customizable nature of the GMMK3, this review will offer both general observations and specific insights based on my chosen configuration. My primary objective was to create a keyboard suitable for diverse tasks, prioritizing quiet operation due to its use in various scenarios beyond gaming. Minimizing rattle and noise levels, common in many gaming keyboards, was a key consideration.

The inclusion of a numpad section was also crucial for my workflow, particularly within the 3D application Blender. Stability was another important factor, aiming to prevent the keyboard from shifting during use. Consequently, I selected a brass chassis and internals, along with Lynx HE (Silent) switches. While a lighter configuration with a plastic chassis and carbon fiber could have potentially further reduced noise, I prioritized the added weight. Furthermore, I opted for a wired connection, although a wireless bottom plate is available as a separate purchase for users seeking that functionality.

Upon receiving my customized GMMK3, its substantial weight was immediately apparent. It’s the heaviest and most stable keyboard I’ve encountered. Connecting it via the selected cable resulted in immediate recognition and functionality. A convenient switch on the rear panel allows for seamless toggling between Mac and PC modes.

My GMMK3 configuration resulted in a quiet and pleasant typing experience, free from unwanted rattle or clicks. The next step involves configuring the keyboard’s extensive functionality. The Glorious Core software offers a vast array of customization options. Each key can be assigned different functions based on press duration and pressure sensitivity, offering up to three distinct actuation levels. Users can program multimedia functions, hotkeys, and various other commands. The software supports up to three customizable profiles for quick switching between different configurations. This allows gamers, for example, to create specialized profiles for specific game types and then switch to a multimedia-focused layout as needed.

The modular design of the GMMK3 also allows for easy aesthetic and functional changes. Individual components can be purchased separately. In my case, having chosen a two-tone chassis with a red bottom and blue top, I can easily acquire a replacement top piece in a different color or material. The chassis is secured with six screws (four on the tenkeyless version), allowing for quick disassembly and reassembly, resulting in a refreshed look. The necessary tools for this are included.

I tested the GMMK3 with Starship Troopers: Extermination, a game requiring precise and responsive input. The keyboard performed flawlessly, accurately translating key presses and allowing for nuanced control over character speed based on key pressure. Subsequently, I used the GMMK3 to write this review, experiencing a quiet and comfortable typing session.

Replacing keycaps and switches is also straightforward, even without disassembling the chassis. It’s advisable to replace keycaps one at a time to maintain the correct layout.

Are there any drawbacks to the GMMK3? In my testing, the only notable omission is the lack of an included wrist rest. Given the keyboard’s height, a wrist rest would enhance comfort during extended use.

Initially, the extensive customization options seemed somewhat overwhelming, but as I delved deeper into creating a personalized keyboard, I appreciated the level of control and the enjoyable process of tailoring the keyboard to my specific needs.

The price of the GMMK3 ranges from 1500 SEK to 5000 SEK, depending on the selected features. Users can start with a basic configuration and upgrade over time, or opt for a fully customized build from the outset, aligning with their budget and requirements.

In conclusion, I highly recommend the GMMK3 from Glorious. Its versatility and extensive customization options make it a compelling choice for a wide range of users, regardless of their profession or gaming preferences. The absence of a wrist rest is the only significant drawback.
