Review: Ghost on the Shore

av Henric Brandt

In Ghost on the Shore, the player character, Riley, finds herself washed ashore on a mysterious island after a harrowing boat trip. She soon encounters Josh, a ghost who tasks her with uncovering the island’s secrets. The narrative unfolds based on Riley’s relationship with Josh and the dialogue choices made, directly influencing her ultimate fate.

Ghost on the Shore excels in creating an atmospheric and, at times, tranquil experience. Players explore the island, converse with Josh, and interact with other spectral entities. However, the gameplay is relatively limited. The inability to traverse minor obstacles, such as low fences, or interact with the environment beyond a basic level, can lead to player frustration as progress is artificially gated by extended detours.

The voice acting is commendable, lending authenticity to the main characters. The dialogue is well-crafted and engaging, with each conversational choice being a one-time opportunity. Players must remain attentive as each selection is timed. As previously noted, dialogue choices influence the relationship with Josh; players can embrace or reject his presence. Ignoring Josh extends the playthrough and can potentially lead to a fractured relationship between the protagonists. Notably, unlike similar titles, the game provides no explicit feedback regarding which choices cause the plot to diverge. The narrative branches into four distinct paths, shaped by the player’s actions and words.

During testing on a MacBook Pro, despite the system exceeding the game’s minimum specifications, noticeable performance dips were observed, particularly during asset loading. Reducing the resolution yielded minimal improvement. Given the relatively simple, though aesthetically pleasing, graphics, the performance issues were unexpected.

Furthermore, the lack of a clear objective early in the game contributes to periods of aimless exploration. While the dialogue maintains player engagement, the absence of varied gameplay mechanics leads to a sense of monotony, despite the game’s stylistic presentation and overall quality.

In conclusion, Ghost on the Shore delivers an atmospheric adventure with strong voice acting. However, the restrictive movement options and the potential for tedious exploration detract from the overall experience, resulting in a middling assessment.
