Having previously reviewed Fast and Furious 9 during its theatrical release, this review will focus specifically on the merits of this excellent UHD edition.
Fast and Furious 9 embraces its over-the-top nature, and upon a second viewing, its outlandishness remains a key part of its appeal. While the plot may stretch credibility, the film delivers consistent entertainment with its gravity-defying car stunts, frequent one-liners, and action-oriented sequences. This UHD edition offers a premium viewing experience: The picture quality in 4K and HDR is exceptional. The contrast between highlights and shadows is of reference quality, complemented by rich and vibrant colors, creating an almost three-dimensional image. The Dolby Atmos sound design provides an immersive auditory experience, with meticulously crafted soundscapes that place the viewer in the center of the action.

While modern movie editions often skimp on bonus content, this release is a welcome exception. The disc includes a wealth of engaging and informative documentaries that delve into the special effects creation process. It is particularly interesting to see the extent to which practical effects were utilized alongside computer-generated imagery. Furthermore, director Justin Lin provides an insightful commentary track, offering a deeper exploration of the film’s production.

The packaging indicates the inclusion of a Director’s Cut, and the term “Director’s Cut” can vary widely in its significance. While some Director’s Cuts offer substantial revisions, akin to Blade Runner or I Am Legend, others present only minor additions. In this instance, the Director’s Cut leans toward the latter. It incorporates approximately ten minutes of extra footage, primarily focusing on clarifying certain aspects within the flashback sequences and adding some additional action. These alterations are not substantial, and do not significantly impact the overall viewing experience given the film’s runtime.

In conclusion, this UHD edition is a worthwhile addition to any 4K collection. It effectively showcases the capabilities of modern display and audio systems. The fact that it delivers 150 minutes of high-octane action and vehicular mayhem is an added bonus.
