Review: Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation)

av Henric Brandt

The Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation) serves as an excellent complement to the Arlo Video Doorbell 2K, which was reviewed previously. The package includes two cameras, and for existing Arlo users, the setup process is remarkably quick. New users will require slightly more time initially, involving app download and configuration. The app provides detailed step-by-step instructions, ensuring a straightforward setup experience.

Placement of the cameras is then dictated by user preference. One camera was positioned in the living room to provide a comprehensive view of adjacent spaces, while the second was installed in a dedicated workspace to monitor valuable items such as Lego collections. The cameras feature a swivel and bendable base, allowing for precise directional aiming. They can be freestanding or securely mounted to a surface.

Upon activating “Away” mode, an audible click indicates the engagement of the automatic lens cover. This ensures privacy by physically blocking the camera’s view, eliminating concerns about unintended recording. A closed cover signifies deactivation, while an open cover indicates active monitoring – a particularly valuable feature.

The cameras are capable of distinguishing between people, animals, and other moving objects. Furthermore, the Essential Indoor Camera allows for the configuration of up to five distinct activity zones, enabling users to exclude areas that might trigger unwanted alerts. Initially, excessive motion alerts were triggered by reflections from external movement. However, deactivating the problematic zone resolved the issue.

Each camera possesses independent settings, allowing for granular customization. The cameras also feature a high-resolution night mode, ensuring effective recording even in low-light conditions.

Ceiling mounting is a potential installation option. However, the notably short power cord necessitates the use of an extension cord, which presents an aesthetic drawback. A longer cord, sufficient to reach floor level when ceiling-mounted, would be a significant improvement.

The Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation) from Arlo relies entirely on a WiFi connection for operation. In the event of network downtime, the cameras become non-functional. There is no provision for local storage via memory cards to provide backup recording capabilities. The absence of a memory card slot is likely linked to the promotion of subscription services. Subscriptions start at 49 kronor per month for a single camera, escalating to 129 kronor per month for two to four cameras. This recurring cost warrants consideration. The base subscription provides 30 days of cloud storage and 2K resolution. An upgraded plan, priced at 179 kronor per month, offers support for unlimited cameras and up to 4K resolution.

A subscription is not mandatory to receive notifications from the camera or to utilize the two-way voice communication and siren features. However, without a subscription, recordings are not saved. Real-time alerts provide the opportunity to respond immediately to detected activity. The voice function offers adequate volume and supports bidirectional communication, enabling remote conversations through the cameras and a mobile device.

In conclusion, the Essential Indoor Camera (2nd Generation) from Arlo remains a recommended product. These cameras are well-designed and offer a range of intelligent features, despite some minor shortcomings.
